| Need advice on transporting yorkie from boston to fla Hello YTer's! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday I need advice, suggestions and definitely some of your experiences regarding transporting my yorkie from Boston to Florida. I am moving to Florida on January 2nd. Traveling with him on the plane under the seat in front of me will not be an option as I think he would flip out being under the seat. He is a barker and when he's unhappy he is nonstop. . .someone mentioned sedating him, however, that makes me nervous. Would I be better off using a pet transportation company who handles the trip in it's entirety? Has anyone ever used a Pet transportation company? One in particular picks your dog up at your house, transports them to the departure airport, he is met at the destination airport and then delivered to my home? I am not sure how much that costs, I just asked for a quote. But again, I would like to know if anyone has used this type of service. I would love to hear from others who have travelled with their babies. . .I am so nervous and want this to be an "easy" experience for him. Barclay is approximately 8lbs, so I know he would fit under the seat on the plane, I am just worried that he will disrupt the other passengers on the plane. Any suggestions or experiences are most welcome. Thank you all! As ususal, this community is the BEST. . .Happy Sunday |

| Im not so sure I would feel comfortable AT ALL with a PET transport company....I honestly dont think I would trust him.. Although cargo would not be my choice, I would certainly choose it before a transport company!! I would NOT trust them at all ( but that is my personal opinion)!! Maybe your vet could give you something to help him relax so you could keep him under the seat and with you!! I just would NOT feel comfortable with a transport company , here is something that happened here in Ma. http://www.care2.com/news/member/325453706/1189160 these puppys were near dead, they were not fed they were over heated and not walked.. Please choose another source of transport!

| thank you for responding and sending the link. . .that's horrible, it made me sick to my stomach. This transport company that I was referring to is bonded and services international and domestic pet transportation. My home is 11 miles from Logan and 22 miles from Orlando on the receiving end. So, yes, I agree that the "best" way to transport him would be with me on the plane. I would like to hear from others who have travelled with their babies who needed sedation. I KNOW Barclay could not make the trip without some kind of sedative. If there's anyone out there that has sedated and traveled with their baby, can you share your expereince. Was your Yorkie groggy the remainder of the day? Did they sleep the whole trip? if so, how long of a trip was it? What if he wakes up and starts yelping and wanting to get out of his crate. . .do I sedate him again? I don't want to put him in cargo, so any experiences or advice would be greatly appreciated BTW, I am flying Jet Blue, they do have a Pet Program. . .Has anyone flown Jet Blue with their puppy? |

| Maybe you could book a late afternoon flight, or evening when ever your dog is most relaxed.. try to do something that will get him tired out before you leave.. a long walk if its not to cold out, a long trip walking around petsmart, play ball in the house, just something that would really really exhaust him. Practice now getting him used to the crate.. or use the same bag you plan on traveling with in your car for short rides leading up to a longer one..keep him in the bag , reward him for being a good boy etc.. you have a month to do this.. Rescue remedy is NOT a sediative, its used for situations just like this... If your not comfortable flying with him barking, perhaps you could hire someeone else to fly down there with him, I am going to Florida Jan 7th and tickets were only 114.00 each way.. Im sure that is cheaper then the transport service. ....I honestly wouldnt care if the transport company was bonded, I would still try anyway possible to keep him with you!! Here is the link to Rescue Remedy Natural stress relief for pets - Rescue® Remedy Pet

| Thank you Jeannie for the great advice. My flight is at 10:23AM. I guess I could get him up early and play and walk him before we leave. i just went on the link that you sent for rescue remedy. . .I am going to order some and try it before I leave to see if it calms him. He is naturally excitable, hyper and always on the go, which I love, I just can't picture him sitting under the seat in front of me for three hours when he can barely sit still for one minute while home!!??? Again, thank you for responding, all great suggestions! |

| Yes I am taking my pup , I am going to my moms she lives in Boca, where are you moving!!! Last time I went to Florida the lady who sat next to me , was flying with her morkie, he did start to bark and whimper.. the flight attended did let her take him out and take him to potty on a pee pad in the bathroom , she also let my daughter hold him and play with him for about a hour.. no one seemed to mind. Im not saying that will happen but I think the flight attended felt badly for the dog and my daughter had just broken her leg while we were in Florida, so it kept them both busy.

Hi Jeannie, I am moving to Clermont, FL which is about 22 miles southwest of Orlando. It's very exciting, yet scary too! It's a big move for me and for Barclay. But we will make it and your reply has encouraged me to take him with me on the plane. . what kind of transporter do you use? I have a small bag that I used when he was a puppy but I'm afraid it would be too small and confining for him right now. . .If they would let me hold him in my lap, I know he would be so good. . .but like you said we can't guarantee that. do you fly out of Logan? How is it going through security? What do they require for papers? Sorry to ask so many questions, it just soundls like you're a pro and I would really like to know what to expect and be prepared. Thanks again, you have been very sweet and encouraging | |

| You Can Fly Successfully With Your Furbaby Hi There, My gosh, you sound just like I did when it was time to fly with my little Bella. She is a ball of energy, always moving unless she is asleep. I was a nervous wreck about flying with her. Worried she would bark and annoy the other passengers. Well we've flown from western NY to Phoenix AZ with her two times now and it went very well. Here are my little bits of wisdom that might help you out. 1. Be sure you have a "vet" certificate certifying your furbaby is healthy. There is a time limit that they are good for so be sure you know what your airline expects. You also need "rabies" shot proof if leaving and flying between states. 2. Call the Jet Blue pet reservation line to register your furbaby for the flight as they limit the number of pets per flight. 3. Get your airline carrier, now. We started by just letting Bella go in and out of it as it sat around. We then started taking her in the car and traveling in it. The trips got longer. She is normally not contained in the car so this was new for her. We found she calmed down very quickly if we covered the carrier with a small blanket. We also took her to Starbucks in the carrier and sat outside so she could get used to seeing people move around her. It was a slow and careful process, but well worth the effort. 4. The day of the flight we got her up early, took her on a long walk, played ball ALOT in the house and kept waking her if she started to nap. We also limited her food and water intake to just enough so we knew she wouldn't be hungry or thirsty. We left at 2:00 p.m. in the afternoon. When we arrived at the airport we took her to the pet area to potty one more time and then it was back in the carrier, covered with the blanket. About 20 minutes before the flight we gave her a "vet approved" dose of Benadryll. We just took her out of the carrier and gave it to her at the gate before boarding. It made her sleepy. She slept the entire flight. We kept her under the seat and covered. We didn't lift it out but peeked to be sure she was okay. She woke up about an hour before we landed. We talked to her quietly and she only whimpered a little. It is very noisy in the plane. We could barely hear her. The constant drone of the engines and her location under the seat made it impossible for others to hear her. In fact, no one knew she was even on the plane. As soon as we got off the plane I took her immediately to the pet area while my husband collected the bags. 5. We also sprayed her carrier pad with DAP (dog appeasing pheramone) it's an imitation of the pheramone a lactating dog releases to keep her puppies calm and relaxed. You can buy it on the internet. Our vet recommeded that and Benadryll as opposed to anything stronger. I know how concerned you are. I was, too! But I've done it twice now. It just takes some some extra work to get them ready. If you put in the time now you'll be just fine. In fact, Bella arrived happy, healthy, and active and I was exhausted from worrying. The second flight was better for me. I think the third time will be a charm for both of us. I'll pm my phone number if you want to talk in person. Believe me, I understand. Take care, it will be okay. Your furbaby will do great, you'll just be worn out at the end of the day. |

| Hi Bellas Mom! Thank you so much for sharing your experiences travelling with Bella. I am sure I will be worn out from worry and he will be just fine, I'm worried now and it's a month away, lol!! The benadryl and DAP sound like they would work for Barclay. I am going to make an appointment with my VET next week to discuss what would be best for him, I will definitely ask about the benadryl and DAP. I saw a travel bag on Jet Blue that was made specifically for traveling with small pets. I am going to order it today and start to get him use to it as you suggested. . . I will use a "light" blanket as you suggested. Going to StarBucks is a great idea too, I get to have a coffee and Barclay gets to experience his crate. I have a month to get him prepared and I will start working on doing this in the next few weeks. Thank you for offering to send your phone number, I will definitely take you up on a call! That was very kind. . . one month to get prepared. . .guess I better get started, thanks so much |

| I have not travelled with Chase yet but I know that I would without a doubt keep him with me under the seat. I understand that you are concerned about him getting upset and flipping out with the barking but I would rather be there with him to console him then let him be all alone and upset. If your baby barks..whines...whatever... It's a three hour flight and people will have to just deal with it. I've been on 6-8 hour flights with human babies crying and screaming the entire time. Nobody can say anything and if they do just ignore them. You've got to do what is in the best interest of your baby. I think that all the suggestions here sound great and I would ask the vet which ones he suggests you do. If it were me....I'd be selfish and not care what other people say or do. You do what you need to do to make sure that your baby is safe and feels as comfortable as possible. I wish you a safe flight. |
