| Oily Hair On My Yorkie For some reason Penny's hair is sooo oily. I don't want to wash her too much so I space it out to twice a week max. I used Pet Head Deodorizing shampoo and Pet Head conditioner in a dark blue bottle. I'm wasn't sure if it was the Pet Head products to I bought a different kind of shampoo called Top Paw Tearless Puppy shampoo, I think it has oatmeal in it. But she is still super oily the next day after her bath. Does anyone have any tips or recommendations, I'm sorta frustrated about this. |

| I have the same problem with Jack. His hair is super oily but his skin gets very dry if I wash him more than once a week. I hope some one comes along with an answer to our problem.

| Your washing her too often. It should be once a week at the most. Also conditioner can make the hair oily so I wouldnt use that

| It sounds like your dog has a skin disorder. You really should do a little research in to what is causing the oily skin. In some dogs it is a inherited disorder. Here is a link that gives some information about the problem. I understand your frustration and I hope this article can give you some ideas. Seborrhoea in Dogs (Scaly or Greasy Skin) |

| I have seen dogs with this condition and always wondered how it could be corrected. Thanks for posting the website Barbara -- it was very informative. Good luck to those of you who are dealing with this problem.

| Thanks for the link. In our case its not the skin that is oily only the hair. In fact his skin is dry but not inflamed. My hair is the same way. Very oily but with dry scalp it drives me crazy. I have even tried the oatmeal shampoo I use on Jack. I am defiantly going to look into this more.

| We had the same problem, ONLY her hair was oily. Her skin was dry so I bought a humidifier and it helped. One thing that has worked for me as far as her hair is concerned is just running a moist towel over her face and head. These seem to be the only oily areas that she has. After she dries it looks great and she feels much better too. |

| Bailey is the same way, mainly on his head, but the skin itself seems fairly normal.

1. supplement with some kind of omega 3's (either just open up a capsule or you can do fish or salmon oil) it will help the condition of his skin. 2. stop washing so much - washing oily hair a lot is one of those knee-jerk reactions. Seems logical, but its going to make the situation worse because you're adding to his dry skin (this may actually be the underlying cause for it long term) and by stripping that oil off the hair you're just stimulating his body to produce more. Its going to be a hard transition, but if you go cold turkey and stop washing him more then once every two weeks you will see a difference. It will take some time for his body chemistry to change but if you can stick with it you'll really see an improvement. 3. use a really gentle shampoo that doesn't strip the hair of moisture The biggest reason for oily hair in dogs or people tends to be over washing... when you strip the hair & scalp of oil you rob it of its moisture - so in an effort to reach a balance again it just creates more. | |

| Diet also plays an important part in the condition of the skin and coat. I know someone that had their dog on a poor quality dog food and the dog had stinky oily hair. Once the dog was put on a quality dog food the coat got better. I feel that dog foods that are full of corn should be avoided. |

| My Westie has skin allergies which are mentioned in the article posted. Whenever he starts getting that greasy feeling - especially when it's been less than a week since his last bath - my Vet says that his skin allergies are acting up. Sometimes when he is itching really bad, he is put on prednisone for 10 days or so to stop the inflammation. We give him Omega 3's and bathe him in a shampoo called "Cortisoothe" from the Vet to help his skin. We BUY him a grain-free food (TOTW) but mostly he is interested in eating the puppy's purina puppy Chow - which is horrible for his allergies. Anyway, my vet says that skin allergies will cause that 'greasy' feeling. |
