| Worry About Hawks & Falcons? Just wondering if my worry about hawks or falcons carrying my little Phoebe off is realistic or if I am being too concerned. I live in Denver, where it is is amazing the amount of wildlife (i.e. foxes, coyote, etc.) so I am very careful; but wonder if anyone has ever had a hawk or falcon carry off one of their Yorkies??? Just trying to keep it all in perspective!

| I don't think you are being over protective. I live in Ohio in the city and we still have coyote and fox and even hawks here. As a matter of fact, I was walking Jack a few weeks ago with a couple of our neighbors and their dogs when we stopped and were chatting. Just about that time a hawk came swooping down and landed across the street. Both the neighbors I was with warned me about the hawks and owls and how they are pretty bold around here. So, yea, we can never be too careful with our little ones.

Thor's Human Donating Member | I don't think anyone who posts here regularly has had a dog attacked by a bird of prey, but there are always a few news stories about birds attempting to carry off dogs as big as 14 lbs. So yeah, I think it's a good idea to keep an eye on the sky. Thor looks EXACTLY like a little bunny hopping across the grass, which is cute, but a little worrying sometimes. |

| Yes be careful! We all need to take normal precautions. If you have birds of prey in your area, you dog is below the bird on the food chain. We have hawks, and owls in my neighborhood. My son worked at the golf course for a bit. He saw hawks pick up bunnies on a regular basis. If you have a small dog, it may look like a meal to a bird. Careful..... |

Yorkie Yakker | I asked my vet about this. Hawks are a threat but he said owls are even worse. Hawks do cry but owls are silent. Also they come out at dusk. You can't see them but they can sure see you. I think I'll keep Harley on a leash. |

| I have had a hawk sitting on the fence watching my yorkie, I have to be very careful when I take them out. A lady I know told me her neighbors dog was taken by an owl.

| Hi, Have not read the other posts yet but will. Just had to tell you what happened here in Spokane, Wa. It was on the news that a owl picked up a small dog, not a Yorkie but bigger, and took off with it. The master had him on leash and held on and run after the owl. The owl dropped the dog, she then rushed her baby to vet. He is okay now. We have a big yard here in the country and fenced. We will always keep our Penny, Yorkie, on leash as much as she wants to run. We have a lot of hawks and even last summer had a couple redtail hawks hanging around. They are after our quail. They are as big as our eagles. They were fighting and boy were they big. We also have coyotes but Penny is never out without us and we have had cougar sightings. The hawks are what scare me as they are right in our yard and not scared of us.

| Your not being over protective, a hawk can fly away with a yorkie. Worst of all they do toture their prey before killing...please be careful. |

Senior Yorkie Talker | Your worry is VERY common and it does happen from time to time. It is most likely to happen to Chihuahua's so I have heard because they...well...Look like rats. NO OFFENCE to anyone! We had a problem with Coyote's and Hawk and even OWLS here!! So we bought a big dog for outside.. No problems past that. =)
