| Yorkie puppy? I would just like to remind everyone that the holiday season is especially tough on those shelters and rescue groups, especially in this economy. Yes, yorkies are abandoned every day....these wonderful babies need you. If you are thinking of adding a pup into your life this holiday, please consider a rescue...these sweet angels are homeless due to circumstances beyond their control.... Maybe fostering a yorkie would be a possibility? yorkerescue.com please, please, please, consider those dogs less fortunate than your own. I have a rescue, he is a joy. roxanne in nc

| Good Post...and if you are in the Clear Lake Texas area, remember Yorkiehaven Rescue for donations and adoptions...I'm not affiliated w/it, but know who is, and she's the best!!!! In fact, whatever area you are in, I hope you'll find your local animal rescue or yorkie rescue, or any other rescue and donate... |

| yorkie pup thanks Sweet Apple, we need to get the word out....the rescue groups are overwhelmed, not to mention the shelters... We also need to get the word out about the pet shops and puppymills.... So much needs to be done to help these poor helpless dogs... Everyone thinks because they are purebred, they are not abandoned or abused. roxanne in nc

| Ytnr YTNR (Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue) could always use extra help in a variety of ways. Just type in ytnr.com to get information!!! I fostered a beautiful 8 pounder who wound up going to his Furever home. Click on "Happy Endings" and check out "Tippy". He was a dream!!! |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I agree, but I just got off the phone with a family with children ages 10 and 5, they saw a beautiful terrier boy puppy at a local shelter and they went to adopt and they were denied , on the phone the mom sounded like a nice lady, she is a homeschool stay at home mom, they have a house with a fence yard, what else do they want? I agreed to meet with them later this afternoon at a local restaurant, they also went to the shelter my son volunteers at but they had nothing small to offer them. so my son told them about me. I wish this groups would consider this in a case to case basis and not just reject a potential good home based on the age of children. Most of us breeders have children and they were or are young.. so what happend to interview and educate? Please explain to me why this groups just denied this people based on the age of their children. just my .02 today.. hugs, carmen in nj |

| Many people will tell you they were denied for various reasons and honestly you cannot always be certain that is why they were denied. I have never flat out denied a person for any ONE reason....except for poor vet references and we get SO many of them it is mind boggling. I have had people complete applications telling me all the things I want to hear...I have spent time on the phone and been SO impressed. Then, called the vet, and the bomb dropped! I rarely speak with anyone now until I speak with their vet. So, please, when someone tells you why they were denied...it really may not be the truth. Don't generalize and say that rescues are wrong and missing good homes. I am sure I have missed some good ones along the way, but rather that than to place them in a bunch of homes that were not good. These yorkies we get are horribly traumatized and mostly because no one bothered to place them properly in the first place. Everyone wants to be touchy feely. No go on this end. Just like when I see people say that they hope a pup goes to a YT member...what makes a person qualified to own a yorkie because they are on an online forum? That is simply naive thinking. I am of the opinion that all rescues and breeders should be doing thorough veterinary reference checks on all applicants. I shudder when I hear of a rescue or a breeder who did not ask those questions. As for children, I can tell you that many rescued yorkies are not good with children. I am sure that all of you are aware of the fact that yorkies are not especially known to be good with children. Couple that with the ones surrendered to us because they were nipping at the children! There is a thread like that right now on YT! Children who have experience with yorkies and who know HOW to properly behave around them are normally considered by most rescues. We all know that children can be good with them....but, we also know it can be a nightmare. How many children are allowed to carry them around? How many yorkies get dropped and injured? How many get tired of children in their faces all of the time? Seriously. IF parents supervise and teach, hey...it can work and it does work. Sadly, many people think yorkies are toys. I just had a family apply and they seemed ok....but then they gave me their reasons they wanted a yorkie: Small enough to carry around like a cat. Fun to dress up. A birthday present for a three year old! I kid you not! They are not stuffed animals!! I really do not like to see the blanket statements about how rescues are turning people down without fences and with children. We do not place pups in homes that do not fit them. If a yorkie has had a bad history with children, I don't care how much a family wants that particular yorkie. Trust me, I get MANY yorkies who have been injured or tortured by children! Carmen...as to your question about what else do they want? Probably a good vet reference. I did not see you mention that you had spoken with the vet. I would strongly suggest you do that if you have not already. And..then, if it were good, I would pay a visit to see how the children handle pups.

| I completely agree with LadyJane and while it would be wonderful if everyone could give trials with over 5 million animals being put down EVERY year due to over breeding by breeders this is not realistic. I also think more is going on with this dog because very few shelters will turn down anyone. Rescues will turn people down but shelters are state run and have laws they have to follow. They gamble knowing that 50% of the dogs they adopt out will be returned but at least 50% of the dogs/cats survived. The ones that don't get adopted usually only have a short time to live in the shelters. My suggestion to Carmen is call the shelter and see what their policy is. How many children did this family have? AKC used to have it on their websited and at dog shows would make the statement these dogs are not the best for families with small children. Some of the reputable breeders on this website also will not sell to families with small children.
