| Just a thought.... I'm reading so much on here that sparks controversy and I always try to look at both sides. After all... fair is fair and one person's opinion isn't always the right one.. or even the wrong one. BUT... I have to say that while I'm listening.. sometimes I just don't get it... I mean .. so many seem to go crazy on here about breed standard and really caring and having a passion for breeding. Also all the more about health and treating the pups well and all that. So yep I am agreeing to most of that, here is my dilemma..... I just don't understand how tail docking fits in to the "caring" part of Yorkie breeding. I understand it goes with standard , but I find it quite a conflict to say all the caring loving stuff and then chopping a tail away for LOOKS???? Personally I LIKE the docked tail look but I also realize it's a fashion thing no matter what the argument about "standard " is.

| I'm not a breeder but I have heard that it's better to dock their tails because they can get hurt. I have a friend who bought a Yorkie that did NOT have her tail docked and when her dog fell off the couch, she fractured her poor little tail in 2 places. She had to have the vet remove the tail after that. So besides physical looks and breed standard, I think they dock tails for safety reasons. But I'm sure a breeder will answer your question better then I did.

| I personally like the tails undocked. That is one of the things that drew me into the Biewers. With the beauitful fan from their tails across their backs. Matter of fact Blossom's pup that I kept I didn't crop her tail, because I knew I was keeping her.....

| I don't know why they do tail docking. I always wondered the same thing. Mandy's Breeder told us they were stopping tail docking on Rottie's in Germany, as of the first on the year. He has three one year olds with tails, they are so cute. I love our Chihuahua's tail, I couldn't picture him without it. What a good question, why do they dock them, I'm sure it's got to be painful.

| Tail docking is simply for standard. I believe it has become illegal in most other countries. It might keep the puppies a little cleaner, but generally they keep their tail up, and their booty needs to be cleaned either way. I had my puppies tails docked, but felt much the same as having my boy skinbabies circumcised. It is elective surgery because of standard.

| I think my yorkies look better with docked tails but did not even know they had long tails naturally. Thank goodness it was done beforehand, I don't think I could do it. People say they don't even feel it but it is hard to think about. |

| I'm not sure about Yorkies but I know why they do it in Boxers and it may be the same reason...Boxers tend to wag their tails a lot and the tails break easily so they dock them at a few days old to prevent them from painful injuries in the future. As for Chihuahuas, my Pixie has a full tail and I don't see any around my area with docked tails...I didn't even know they did it to Chis.

Donating YT 14K Club Member | just so you know, this subject has also sparked quite a lot of controversy. do a search on it and you'll find out. I prefer the look of tail docking. I dock tails and I've had my son circumcised. Not only for looks but for cleanliness as well.

I think the long tail is cute. Does he curl it around him when he sleeps like cats do?

I Love Thor Donating Member | I think your dog with the undocked tail is really cute! I just don't understan how people can say taht it isn't painful. Same with the removal of the dew claws. How can it not be? Cutting through a bone, and meaty flesh? Yucky, poor little guys. And do you take the puppies to the vet and they do it or so the breeders do it themsevles? I couldn't imagine doing something like that to a poor little baby dog, but it's done all the time and it is 'breed standard'. I also think it's cute when they have their tails docked and Thor has his docked. Originally Yorkshire Terriers were breed to be used as dogs that caught rats in the mines. They probably docked their tails so when they hunted the rats they didn't swing and hit things and chase off the rats. With Brittany Spanials I know that they dock their tails so when they are hunting in the long grass etc., their tails doesn't swing and hit the brush. So maybe the reasons are related! Hannah |

| Thank you for the compliments. He does curl it around himself just like a cat. I do like both docked and undocked tails. I think it would be nice if breeders (who knew from the start they were selling puppies to pet homes) gave the buyer the choice.
