| A question about neutering` My husband is absolutely against neutering Sammie. He did not fight me with Gracie's being spayed, but he is holding firm on Sammie. Must be a man thing. Anyway, do any of you have dogs that are not neutered? Do they wear the belly band forever? Sammie is marking all over the house, he even marked Gracie!!!!! How do I live with this marking maniac if I cannot have hime neutered? Do any of you have dogs that are not fixed?

| My last dog, a pug, was not fixed and he was a nightmare. He marked everywhere and freaked out all the time...he was just a mess. We neglected to do it more out of ignorance than anything else and it was so detrimental for him. I feel that had we fixed him we may have had a much better experience with him. I learned my lesson and Chewy is being fixed in 2 weeks. Men can be weird about it. I say get over it and think about the health and well-being of the dog. I hope you make the best decision you can! |

| When I first got Codie, my hubby was against having him neutered -- but it was honestly out of ignorance. He was not familiar with the risks and potential harm. So I did some research and presented it to him. Then I had my vet explain it to him also. After Jim was informed, he was eager to have Codie spayed. So see if your vet will speak to your hubby and help him understand why it's beneficial for your dogs overall and long term health. Good luck!

19 & 20 years old didn't like the idea, but they knew it was best for Poncho. So like I said, it's a guy thing!

| I hope your husband reconsiders. It sounds like you have a male and a female like me and he will always mark unneutered. My male was neutered and he did fine with it. He also stopped humping after he was neutered.

I know someone, somewhere has an intact male Yorkie who doesn't mark, but I have yet to meet them. They are especially bad if there's another dog in the house. Makes the marking twice as important. The longer you wait, the more ingrained the habit becomes and the more likely he'll have to wear a belly band even after he's neutered. Good luck with this. CJ

| We were at a pet boutique the other day and someone had a young Pom, under a year, who was not neutered. He had a belly band on but he lifted his leg on EVERY piece of furniture, display, etc. in this little store. It was absolutely disgusting. She said she was going to breed him but couldn't take the marking any more and made an appt to have him fixed. She was apologizing to everyone in the store about how um.. rude he was being. I LOVE taking Loki places with me and if he acted like that I would be so embarrased. I had Loki fixed at 6 months and he has NEVER humped and NEVER lifted his leg. I'm so happy we had it done so early. Please talk some sense into your husband. Good luck

| I think most of the breeders on here who own stud dogs have unneutered males like txshopper73, femistvr and Laura to name a few. I am opposed to neutering too unless there is a good reason to do it. My vet convinced me that a dog, just like a person, should be left with all their parts unless there is a reason that is in the best interest of the dog to have them fixed. I took everyone's advice withput researching it very thoroughly that neutering is healthier and I had my daughter's male neutered. Mine, Hefner, came already fixed. They both still mark a lot and are not completely house trained especially in strange places. They wear bellybands when not at home for this reason...to avoid the embarassment. it is part of being a male dog imo. I plan not to spay my girls either. Good luck with your Sammie and, no offense, but I hope your husband wins this battle. |

I know that until recently, it was "common knowledge" that spaying/neutering would guarantee a healthier, longer-lived dog. Now this has been questioned. As with the vaccination controversy, I think a lot more needs to be looked into and a more complex set of recommendations need to be made. It's not as simple as we once thought. If housebreaking is a deal breaker, however, neutering gives you the best shot at housebreaking a male. I do wish it were not true. We've had a beautiful male puppy in each of our last litters I would've just loved to have kept and bred, but I just can't take the marking. Thank God for folks like you, Kim, who've managed to find a balance between letting them be dogs and living with them as part of the household. It takes talent and dedication. CJ

| Max was neutered at 10mo old and he is so much more enjoyable as a neutered boy. Before his neutering he was marking in the house (thankfully I had lots of belly bands on hand) and was always trying to prove his manhood to other dogs he'd meet by barking at them or showing them who was boss. After he was neutered it took about 1 week, the marking stopped completly and he is so much more calmer and well behaved. IMO neutered males make better companions.

| I am having the worst time with my male dog. I intentionally bought him for breeding. He is truly the smartest dog, was perfectly well potty trained and then "puberty hit". He is peeing all over my house and between him and Bella I am about to have a meltdown. I bought a belly band but when my son is home with him he doesnt put it on and doesnt keep an eye on the dogs. I'll take the dog out, he will literally pee in 5 different areas, come in the house and then lift his leg in front of me! Is there a deterent spray I can buy? I really don't want to have to neuter him, but I cant take all the peeing. I am also curious, on average, what you guys pay for carpet cleaning. I just got an estimate today $175. That is high to me!!!! I'll keep looking. Maybe i'll take that $175 and have a little something cut off. - Also curious what neutering costs?? Thanks Molly |
