Can anyone please help me,my 6 month old yorkie is 70% potty trained. my problem is any time i leave her out to go potty she goes on the step directly outside the back door which is only 2 feet in size when there is a hole bigger backyard for her to go! I have done the whole going out with her since the start and stayed with her until she went and praised her for going(which would be somewhere in the backyard and not on the step) but any time she goes out on her own this happens! and she stands all over it or even sits on it barking until she is left back in. im really at my witts end with this. Sometimes its not always convinent for me to go out with her every time so i have to put her out on her own(then this happens!) PLEASE HELP Also i still have to keep an eye on her in the house incase shes goes as she doesnt scratch at the door to go out and still has accidents, plus the other day she pooed in the house and i caught her eating it!! yuk, help me please, what should i do?? |

| The fact that she is going outside at 6 months is a good thing. Is it very cold or damp in Ireland now? Some Yorkies don't like to go outside if it's too cold or wet. It's a Yorkie thing. The alternative is sneaking to go in the house somewhere. I wish I could be of more help but other than going out with your little one I don't know how you would get her to go further out. I watched It's Me or the Dog and was told if they eat there poo it may be because they learned it from their mother when she did this to keep the pen clean,or they may need more nutrients in their food but I'm not sure. I have heard of sprinkleing Accent food tenderizer on their food or using a product from Foster & Smith website called Distaste that works and keeps them from eating it.

| Well if you are really serious about correcting the problem you are going to have to inconvenience yourself and maybe even carry her out and put her in the yard and make sure she goes potty where she needs to. And wash or bleach that concrete area where she is pottying and then rinse it really well. It has to have no scents of pee or she will potty there again. It may take some of your time but well worth it in the long run if you can get her to potty everytime in the yard. Hope this helps.

| What's on the other side of the step? grass or dirt? Reesie does the same sometimes and I've noticed she doesn't like to walk on grass. She likes the long field grass to look for mice but she hates the lawn. Maybe feels weird on her feet? I dunno. Also, 6 months is pretty young and she might not feel very secure moving far away from the door alone. |

| Yorkies are Stubborn. My girl is a year old and she won't go outside WITHOUT me! She will wait on the steps until I come outside. I'm sure she would pee on them if she really had to go. |

| She is probably just so anxious to get back inside with you that she goes on the step. Kalina always went potty in the yard until she had her puppies - then she would go as fast as she could and as close to the house as she could because she was so anxious to get inside again! I agree that you should take her out into the yard and stay with her until she pees. She probably likes you there and loves when you praise her. I had to start going outside with Kalina again for a while, even though I don't always want to, believe me.

| Do you have a command that he knows to eliminate? Mine know that when I say "go potty", it's time to go. Once they do their business, they know it's time to go back in so taking them out is a snap. When I can't go out with them, they wait by the door and I just tell them from the inside to go potty. Most of the time, they get it and will run out into the yard but sometimes they are very stubborn. I just leave them out there until I get a chance to walk outside and then I check the hairs around their private area to see if they went. It they're wet, we go in. If not, I give them the potty command again and they go. It won't take long for him to learn a potty command. The one year old we just adopted learned pretty quick and he had no potty training at all. Just pick one or two words to say all the time when you want them to eliminate and KEEP repeating it until they go. Then praise like crazy/treat. He will catch on. Good luck! |

| I have a command that I use too. It's really good to start that. I say "Hurry up. Be a good girl." And they go! Now that I have a male, I still say the same thing. I hope he thinks he is a girl because I would rather have him squat like his sisters than lift his leg.
