| Is it inhumane of me to have a dog AND go to work all day? I posted this on a different page, but would like to open it up to a larger group: I am noticing that a lot of people come home during the day to play with their dogs or take their dogs to work with them. I cannot do either of those things. Is it inhumane of me to have a dog AND go to work all day? My building manager is saying that he thinks it is, but I swear there are people out there who do it. Are those dogs at some sort of disadvantage healthwise or personality-wise? Do they suffer? If so, I am going to give my puppy to my aunt when I return to work full time. I don't want him to suffer. |

Does your baby have any separation anxiety issues? If your baby does, you want to start training to get him used to you leaving. My puppy only cried the first 2 days I left for school and then she was fine. But some puppies really go through a tough time. You can also buy a Kong so the puppy will have something to do during the day. Good luck with your baby and with whatever you decide.

| I have to work from 8 until 4:00pm everyday and DH doesn't get home most days until 5ish. My Jada did fine by herself but we felt guilty so we got her a playmate our little boy Bogie. They play good together, but in all fairness I think they sleep all day even having each other. They are pee pad trained so we don't have to worry about them having to hold it for long periods of time. They are super excited to see us when we get home. And they get my undivided attention from 5pm until bedtime, plus they don't have seperation anxiety either. I would say you baby will be fine if you go back to work. Also I wouldn't want to leave them in a small crate all day. Mine confined to the kitchen/dining area when we are not home.

| I'm blessed because although my husband works long hours he works near home and has the flexibility to come home and spend time with Sadie during the day. My vet did tell me though that a dog will adjust to the owners schedule. If you are gone all day they will use that time sleeping and be ready to go when you get home. He said that the main thing is that if you are gone all day they need you to be home in the evenings and giving them attnetion. As long as you can do that they really are pretty adaptable! |

| I have to go to school everyday from 8 to 10 MWF and 8 to 12 TTH, and I also work most days 4 to 10. Luckily, my boyfriend works an 8 to 5 shift so Jimi does not spend alot of time at home alone. We kind of worked it out that way on purpose. When he is alone though, we keep him baby-gated in the back part of the house so he has a couple of rooms but not full-run of the place. He used to be gated in just the bathroom (for potty accident purposes) but over time we just kept giving him more and more space to roam and he hasn't had any accidents at all while we're gone. (I still don't trust him in the kitchen - it is the one place he will still go potty in.. so we are working on letting him have the whole house. ) I used to feel so terrible leaving him alone but I am pretty sure he just sleeps the whole time. When I come home, he kind of has that sleepy-eyed look like he just woke up.We also have a cat and they keep each other company, because the cat can just jump the gate when he wants to visit Jimi. Toys are also great for when you are gone. There are alot of interactive toys that can keep them busy for long periods of time. (Although these toys do not interest Jimi, he just prefers stuffed animals! haha) Separation anxiety can be a problem, but if you get them used to you leaving it will help out alot. Even if you just take short trips out just so they can get used to it. Jimi usually whines when I leave, so I always give him a treat and that usually helps alot. I know you mentioned how alot of people on here go home and check up on their babies during work and such. I think many people do this not because it is entirely necessary (although they might have to potty), but we do it just because we love & miss our babies so much and want to check up on them! good luck!

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | My DH and I both work during the day and Jersey (9 mos old) is home alone for over 8 hrs. I would love to get him a playmate but the time is not right (we're expecting our 1st granchild in Feb and I want to be available ). He has the run of 3 rooms and I do think he sleeps all day because when we come home he is ready and I mean ready to play. He does not have a seperation issue with us so he does fine. |

| It's not the perfect situation to be in, but who can talk down to you when most of the people who have pets and kids...WORK ALL DAY!!!! If you can't or don't want two babies, find a routine that works for you. Be creative. Use a potty box. If you can, give your baby it's own room or large area to play in. Use a TV with the Animal Planet on all day. Some people buy DVD's made for dogs or use cartoons. They are like kids and need a creative environment. Make it fun (and SAFE) for your baby at home while you're gone to work. Don't listen to nay-sayers if you start coming up with outstanding idea's, because they will put them down if they don't love their dogs as if they were their children, or if they don't like dogs at all. | What would you do if you had a child? If you can afford to quit and stay home, it's ideal! But if you can't, you find daycare or a babysitter and go to work! When your child gets old enough, you go to work and leave them home. Do they get into more trouble when the parents aren't home? Yep! But that doesn't take away all of the love you have for them If you feel that you have enough time to give your furbaby when you're not working, and you make sure they are safe, and entertained as possible, while you're gone, your baby will be just fine, and love you just as much as if you were home all day.

YT 500 Club Member | My husband and I both work all day. I work 8:30 to 4:30, and my hubby works 7:00-3:30. I go home at noon and let Sophie out and give her a treat, but there are times when she has had to be home alone all day. She has done very well. She is 8 y/o and has established a good routine. Although I have taken her to work with me and let her sleep on the couch in my office, she really is happy to go home. She loves sleeping on top of the pillows on our bed, and we find her there when we get home. She seems to just adapt to our schedules and knows what to expect.

| We have 3 furbabies and work all day also. I am sure they don't like it when we leave but have adjusted to it. We shut all doors to the bedroom and bathrooms. For the most part they are potty trained. We look forward to coming home and being greeted with excitement and bunch of kisses

| I leave home every day by 6:15AM and don't return until 4:30PM or so. Buster stayed home by himself until he was almost a year old and then we got Maggie. I had to take my baby to daycare when she was only 3 months old when I had to go back to work. It can't be that bad for Buster & Maggie. Until they were pretty much house trained, they were confined to an area with tile. I still get some surprises but not many. I do come straight home or run only quick errands. I have a doggie door but I am still anxious to get home and check on them. DH works nights and sleeps all day but it's not the same as having someone at home with them. He only started working nights this past summer, before that he was home by 1:30PM so that wasn't too bad.

| I work all day and Sophie Kate is home, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday I have a dog walker come over for a 30 minute walk and on Tuesday and Thursday she goes to work with my friend (owns a small dog store/boutique). I felt guilty at first but Sophie Kate knows the routine now and she seems fine/happy.

| I struggle with that one too, not so much working but where to put my puppy while I am at work to encourage potty training. My brother (married with 3 children) has a yorkie that he crates all day. He's done this since the dog was a puppy. The dog goes right in the crate on his own when he sees everyone leaving for work. It's his routine. He is a little hyper thing but no more hyper then some of the stories I have read on this forum. As far as behavior goes he is more well behaved than my puppy that gets to stay in a nice size baby gate plan pen! He's a nice dog and good with their kids! Don't stress about it MOST people with pets work! Lisa Kodi's new mom |

| NO WAY is it inhumane...don't give up your precious pup just because some loser tells you that you're not home enough. MOST Americans that i'm familiar with work 8 hours a day and leave their dogs at home...it's not inhumane at all...it's NORMAL... if you are worried about it try doggie day care where they can play with other dogs every day, 3 days a week, whatever you want....and maybe get another dog to keep each other company, but don't give up your baby because some idiot complained about you working...People work and people own dogs every day...it's not cruel unless you're gone like 10 hours or more...but a normal 8 hour day is just fine!!! |
