Aggressive behavior I just adopted a one year old Yorkie and his foster mommy assured me that he didn't have an aggressive bone in his body and he is really sweet. So far, so good until today when he FINALLY started playing with the toys we have, he started getting possessive over the toys (that weren't his to begin with) and growled at my 5 month old yorkie. Is this normal? I don't think they have established a pecking order yet and he really is docile most of the time. He tolerates my 5 month old chewing on his ears and lips without so much as a grunt. Should I just let them be as long as they aren't hurting each other?

I would say the behavior is perfectly normal. Mine do the same thing when one has a toy and another one wants it. It is just part of their game.

Thank you! It doesn't seem malicious but he's new and I don't know the difference yet in his serious bark and his playful one. Especially since now he is starting to warm up and make more noise and play.

I agree that its natural behavioir. They can get aggressive if another dog trys to get their toy. And of course, the toy that the fist dog has is always the one the second dog wants. I let them work it out and only intervene if the fighting looks too rough. They should know the signals denoting when one is getting too agressive for the other. This is rare. I dont buy into the pecking order you mention. What I have seen (and others have discussed here) is that there is no usual pecking order. The dominance heirarchy changes constantly. I have seen it myself with my guys... Just when it seems one is the Numero Uno Top Doggy, they switch and that yorkie will make submissive gestures to the other. Strange but true.

I have noticed that! They do take turns with being submissive. They were playing earlier this evening and were fighting over a toy and there wasn't any growling so maybe I was just being paranoid.
