| Brand new--Just got our yorkie! I am SO thrilled to be here! We just got our 4 year old yorkie, Sunny, yesterday. She was a rescue from a puppy mill. She has the sweetest personality, and other than a little bit of a startle reflex, you'd never know she has had a rough 4 years of life. She is lovable and sociable and is pottying outside very well! (We have just been taking her out ourselves, not letting her out on her own yet.) She's only about 5 or 6 pounds--I'm a little worried that she may not be able to get down the deck stairs outside to the yard by herself. Also, we are afraid to let her jump down from the sofa or futon. Not sure how to know if she can do it without hurting herself--she is so little! Am I worrying too much? We just keep taking her up and down the steps ourselves and putting her down from the sofa. We are so excited to have her as part of our family! Thanks for listening! Pam in Missouri |

| Congratulations & welcome to YT! Thank you so much for giving this little girl a loving home. Sunny sounds so precious and loved already. We would love to see some pictures! No, you are definitely not worrying too much. Many of these little yorkies are hurt trying to jump from places they shouldn't. If she is going to be allowed on the furniture, please get some pet steps or a pet ramp (they make taller ones to put next to the bed, also). Walmart, Walgreens or Petsmart carry some inexpensive stairs that work well next to a sofa, or you can google them and find zillions of them online.

| Hi and welcome to Yorkie Talk! It is wonderful that you have given Sunny a loving home. I know she appreciates you and will be a strong family member. My little Jillie turned 6 months old yesterday. She did not do the stairs at all in the beginning, she was too small. I carried her up and down the stairs. One day she decided she wanted to go upstairs by herself. She got part way up and stood there barking for me to come get her and carry her the rest of the way, which I did. The next day she started going all the way up and that was all there was to it. She still was not going down the stairs though. I continued to carry her downstair until she started going part way down by herself. Within a few days she was doing the whole up and down thing and has not looked back. lol As far as jumping is concerned, you should be watchful of that. Others have suggested ramps or stairs, a good idea. They are going to jump, but usually it is better to go ahead and put them on the floor if you are getting up and know they will follow you.
