| Yorkie or Schnauzer? We have a full bred Yorkie and just recently adopted another Yorkie but I've been asked if he is a Schnauzer several times. He is an owner surrendered dog and the owners kept him in a typical Schnauzer cut but they say he's a Yorkie. Maybe they didn't know or were not being honest (for whatever reason). How can I tell? I've looked at pictures but if they aren't cut like a Schnauzer, there's really not a noticeable different. Thanks! |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Can you post pictures? Obvious differences between the breeds are their coats. Yorkies have straight silk coats with no undercoat colored in gold/blue. Schnauzers have wiry hair with an undercoat colored in black, silver/black, or white.

| That actually helps a lot. His coat is VERY soft and is single layer. Not wiry at all. In fact, my pure bred has a more wiry coat than the adopted one. I'm trying to figure out HOW they made his coat SO soft. He was disgusting when we got him but a haircut and two baths later, he has a gorgeous blue coat. I wish I had pics. Haven't had a chance to take a good one of him. He's still adjusting but adjusting well so far. |

YT Addict | I get asked that about my Yorkie. His hair is very soft but wavy. He is a blue/gold but the last time I took him to the groomer they actually cut him in a Schnauzer cut (pretty much shaved his body and cut his face like a schnauzer). He was almost completely silver when I picked him up whereas with hair he was a mixture of Black/silver/gold. Needless to say I wasn't very happy. Anyway, I have papers on him saying he is a full blooded Yorkie but some do mistake him for a Schnauzer. |

Didn't they ask you how you wanted him cut? That's weird. I kiept my previous yorkie cut with a Schauzer cut and always had to please my case. Please tell us you didn't pay for this.

| His face is kind of like a Schnauzer...long nose and broad but my girlfriend has a yorkie that looks very much the same way but is a different color. I'm sure he's a yorkie now...never even knew about Schnauzers until I kept getting questions about them. LOL!! I won't do a Schnauzer cut on him ever. I don't really like the cut at all. I will probably keep a puppy cut on both for low maintenance grooming. Got to grow out the adopted ones hair out first. He had so many mats, we had to shave him. |

YT Addict | I did pay for it but I wasn't happy. When I dropped him off I asked that they cut the hair on his body short (not shaved) because he had been getting matts and doesn't like to be brushed. I asked them to leave his face as full as they could without it looking weird with his short cut. I like the teddy bear looking face. When I picked him up he was pretty much shaved, Top knot was completely gone. The only facial hair he had was a "moustache". His ears were shaved. He looked like a completely different dog. |
