| Taking puppy home: 10 weeks vs 14 weeks Hi, What do you think is better - to take home a puppy at 10 weeks vs 14 weeks. We have the option of either with our new pup - he is over 3 pounds (yeah!) at 8 weeks old. Do you think they get better socialized with their puppy siblings or with you at 10 weeks old? How old was your pup when you brought it home? thanks so much. |

| I also agree that longer is better. They are still SO tiny at 14 weeks and need the socialization with their litter mates. I think 10 weeks is still a bit young for a yorkie to go home. |

| Minnie went home at 10 weeks. She's 19 weeks now, and I have a little trouble with her biting. She is a wonderful dog, though. :-) |

YT Addict | Derby came to us at 8 weeks, and I still think it was early. He was so little! Just crying for the first while... he missed his mom! but he's ok now. He's 4 months old now! Nothing we can do, but I say the longer the better. |

| Generally the longer the puppy stay with his mom and siblings the better. Particularly with such small dogs as yorkies. If you can wait 14 weeks that will be better. I got my puppy at 5 months because the breeder did not release her puppies before then. It was hard to wait, but better for me because he was trained to the puppy pads and crate and it was much easier than dealing with a really young puppy. |

| Crate training I put my Kodi (14 weeks old)in a crate at night and he goes willingly and likes it and always has from day one without any crying at all, I am lucky that way! He remains in there about six hours (from 10pm until 4:30am) if he lets me know earlier I get up with him but he's like an alarm clock @ 4:30 almost all days. I work fulltime and leave Kodi in a baby gate playpen for 8.5 -9 hours with a pee pad which he faithfully goes on, his bed and toys. My brother, also a yorkie owner (2yrs old) says I should start leaveing him in his crate while I am at work as part of crate training. I would like to crate him all day as it is useful in potty training. I can already see this, the way he goes to the door right out of the crate in the morning, but I think he is still too little to crate all day. I am afraid he will pee and poop in there and that will not be good as he will then start doing the same thing during the night. So, opinions? Is he too young for 9 hours? Should any yorkie be crated for 9 hours? Lisa Kodi's new mom I know there are strong opinions on this subject, please be polite |

| My baby came home to us at 7 1/2 weeks because the breeders were friends of ours. He was ready to go and has done great here. If I were gone all day, I would do the same thing you are doing now. Giving him his own space with a pee pad. I think it would be miserable for a Yorkie to be in his crate all day. Especially with as fun loving and adventurous as Yorkies are, you can imagine how they feel about it. I crate train and aside from nights, the longest I have left my yorkie in his crate is three hours. I have a friend who keeps her Yorkie in a crate all day and she has behavior problems. We call her spawn of satan. |

| Personally I think you should stick to what your doing for a while. 14 weeks is still young to leave in a crate for so long. I think he will most likely soil in the crate, ruining any training you have already begun. At night, like us, puppies can hold it longer because they are sleeping. Don't rush anything, do what works for you and your puppy! P.S where are the pictures
