| Tummy issues Hello all. I am posting in hopes for a little bit of advise, but am assuming that I should just call the vet at this point and no longer let Bentley's body try to heal itself. Here is the issue: Bentley started to have soft stools on Monday, not too bad, and just a few were soft and the other two were as they should be. Tuesday/Wednesday was the same thing. Thursday was half soft bm and some (a tiny bit) of liquid. Friday (today) he has had a normal bm and two mucus-y stools. I understand that dogs are different than humans, but I am in medical school and have learned that 95% of all patients (human or not) if given the chance to ride something out, will do so. I started giving him a tsp. of pure pumpkin on Monday, once a day -- when this didn't slow down I tried twice a day on Tues/Wed and started adding pedialyte to help ensure he does not dehydrate. Thursday I stopped with pumpkin and gave him a tsp of plain yoguart and 2 tlsp of plain white rice -- that actually seemed to help yesterday because he did have a normal stool later that evening. I have also been giving him is normal food (which is natural balance - small bites). He's drink plenty of water and pedialyte, he is 100% active/normal energy, nose is cool and wet and the skin on his back (when checked often) is at of right consistency for being well hydrated. He is not vomiting or having any other issue. We do walk him, twice daily, and with him being a puppy he sometimes gets a hold of things and I do take them out (as quickly as possible), but nothing has been "bad" it's mostly been paper that I take out right away. The ONLY thing that I have changed is that I started giving him Greenies -- he got a petite Greenie, once daily. I stopped giving these on Thursday thinking this may be the cause. I am sort of at a loss - I don't want to have to go to the vet is they will tell me what I already know (the drive is quite far) and he has no other issues, but I am still a worried "mom" and want to ensure he is healthy at all times. Any information, suggestions would be appreciate by both Bentley and myself. |

| greenies are horrible; please read about them; and it's good that you stopped them pumpkin acts like a fiber and will make the stool loose the best thing is to give boiled chicken and rice for few days; that should settle the stomach and return the poop to normal. no need for pedialyte if he's not vomiting or having diahrea, especailly if he's getting enough water. other than he sounds like he's doing great. good luck

| Thank you. I knew that pumpkin was a fiber, but it also has a natural enzyme that will clean the colon out of purities. Do I stop his normal food and just feed him the rice and chicken breast? That was my next step, but I wanted to see what someone else with a yorkie thought. As I said before, he is very happy (jumping on me now to play with his toy) he just seems to have loose stools and some diarrhea. Thank you. Melissa |

you can stop the pumpkin and instead add to the food a probiotic which will help fight the bacteria in the gut. i use Primadophilus Reuteri powder by nature's way from a wholefood store or vitamin shoppe (in the fridge section). you can add 1/8 teaspoon with every meal; it's best to feed 4 small meals daily; instead of 2 big ones; easier for the stomach. continue to use the probiotic indefinetely as it's really important for the gut's health. currently i feed mine the honest kitchen dehydrated raw food (human grade food) and i add probiotics, digestive enzymes, and halo vitamins. best of luck http://www.naturesway.com/?pid=14241 www.thehonestkitchen.com

| I had an issue with Moses a month back. Soft stools. I took him off his food entirely and gave him boiled white rice and chicken twice a day. I did this for 3 days until he was having mostly normal movements. I also started giving him about 1/4 c plain, organic yogurt. The vet also said he could a little, little bit of pepto for no more than 2 days, 2x a day. He was fine after 4 days and I gradually added his regular food to the chick and rice. We watch him like a hawk and give him very little other than his regular food as we have found he has a sensitive stomach. He still gets the yogurt every other day. So far, knock wood, he has been fine. I will agree with a vet visit if, after a few days on this diet, he does not improve. |

| yeah, I found out about the yogurt from a post on here. It really helps him, so I try to make sure he gets it every other day. Isabel, my other yorkie, is the Iron Maiden in that she has only been sick once in 7 years, but I make sure she gets some too. Why take the chance? |

| yes; probiotics is essential for both human and dog. my dog had many stomach issues; her belly used to be grey or brown in color; until someone recommended probiotic; i bought the Primadophilus Reuteri powder (also used for children) within few days her belly turned to pinkish healthier color and now she doesnt vomit anymore. it has been a life saver; i also take the capsule one

| Thanks everyone! Bentley and I appreciate the help. I did go with the yogurt for the natural enzyme I will go to Whole Foods today and get what you suggested. I will also stop his food for a few days while I feed him the boiled chicken and rice. I have been going back and forth between starting him on a raw, natural diet anyhow. We actually haven't had any issues with his Natural Balance food and I have read a lot of amazing things about this brand -- so I am not too worried. I was taught that since pumpkin is a natural laxative that it should help to "clean out" the issue... I will continue to do what I am doing and take your advice and see how he does; if problems are still there on Monday we will go to his vet. I am pretty positive that he is and will be OK though. Elly, I have never heard of the greyish/brown tummy issue! Bentley has had a pink tummy since he was a baby (he is actually only 6 months and still a baby). |

i am a bit confused; u are concerned that bently has loose stool or diaherea; yet you are aware that pumpkin is a natural laxative. so if u stop the pumpkin wouldn't the stool return to normal i am just thinking out loud.; take care and have a nice weekend.

| They changed their formula. The old ones didnt digest and some dogs got blockages and died. The new version is supposed to be digestable but I have heard of problems with them. I dont buy their product because back when it was the older version they were killing dogs and the company knew about it and still kept selling them. So I dont trust them
