| Name change at 6 months? Too confusing? My 9 yr old daughter is getting a yorkie for her birthday in a week and a half. She is 6 months old and has been kept in a bathroom all day long - until my aunt got it a couple of days ago. My daughter has been in love with yorkies and this will be the most exciting thing ever for her! Here is the only problem - they have the same name! My daughters name is Ellie and the puppy is Ellie May, but called Ellie. My aunt said that she knows her name really well. I don't want to confuse the puppy, but I would really prefer for them not to have the same name. I want to do what's best for the puppy so I'd appreciate any advice! Maybe I should just change my daugthers name - kidding :-) I'd love to hear your suggestions! |

| You could slightly change it so it still sounds like Ellie to the dog but not your daughter. My friend rescued a dog when he was about 3years and it was named Blanket, but she changed his name to Blenco with no problems. Yay for your new puppy |

| HaHa..trust me if the dog Ellie falls in love with your daughter Ellie it won't matter what you call her because she will stick like glue to your daughter so if you call one..you will get both. Dogs can learn a new name if it is that important to you. They also learn to come with lovebug names..mine all have a lot of names but come running if they think they are going to get a treat...

| What about a slight change like Ella instead of Ellie? Or Even Jellie. Good luck, an congrats on your new puppy!

Jax will respond to Jax & Jack. Everyone in the family calls him Jax except for Grandma who is constantly calling him Jack.

| I like the idea of something similiar. Do you think Molly sounds kind of like Ellie? I can't even tell you how excited I am about this puppy! I have 4 kids (the youngest is 3) and I have been waiting forever to feel like I would have enough time to devote to a puppy. My kids are going to absolutely adore her - whatever her name turns out to be! I love all of the suggestions! Keep 'em coming! |

| Molly & Ellie are pretty similar. I think whatever you do, she should be able to catch on to her new name. I can tell you're excited! There is few better feelings then opening your home to a new puppy! They're a lot of work but they're so totally worth it!

| I adopted Max when he was 2 years old. His name was Toby for 2 years (his owner surrendered him) and he responded to Max in no time. Toby and Max sound nothing alike...you shouldn't have any problem. Good luck!

| Just about every pup that has come into my home has had a name change. Many of them have come from situations where I did not know their original name. They all adjusted to their new name within a day or two! She will be so happy to be with people and be loved and really will not care what you call her!

| Thanks for the help! It makes me feel better to know that others have changed names and haven't had a problem. I might just let my daughter choose it. We are keeping it a suprise until her birthday and I can't stand not being able to talk to her about it! Only 10 more days! |

| When we got our yorkie he was a year and a half old. His name was Chase and now it is Jackson. You can change a dogs name. A lot of dogs are in the shelters and nobody knows their name and they get a new one and some of these dogs are two or three or older. You can teach an old dog new tricks so a six month old would be easy. Last edited by jacksonsmum; 10-28-2009 at 04:20 AM. |

| I saw an episode on Victoria Stillwell where the people got the dog from a shelter and they could not get him to respond to his name ( new name) , anyways, she said to give them a GREAT treat, sit in front of the pup, and start saying the name, each time he/she responds give a treat...make sure you get eye contact... say name when she responds to Molly, give her a treat.. she did it in 5 minute intervals...a few times each day and each time the dog responded it got a GREAT treat.. few days later the dog responded to his name...

| We got our Lab from the pound when he was a year and a half. His name was Val, and he only spoke Armenian. Today his name is Wallace, and he now speaks English with a slight Scottish accent. As long as you give them lots of love, they come-a-runnin! |
