| My poor poor doggie... I have 2 yorkies, a female and a male. Chloe is 5 years old but I swear she is still a puppy, always wanting to play ball. Skeeter is 7 years old and is the quiet, shy, most laid back dog. Skeeter has always had a beautiful coat but over the year he has gradually started losing his hair. It started out in a little patch right above his tail but is quickly spreading up his body. It doesn't effect the head or his front legs. He acts perfectly fine but it is bothering me that I can't help him or make his hair grow back. I have taken him to 3 different vets and he has been tested for Cushings, thyroid diseases and a battery of many other tests. The vets have given me shampoo to use twice a week (Keratolux) and the last vet started him on a fat supplement and antibiotics but can't tell me what it is. They have never scraped his skin to check for mites or fleas. I work in a doctors office so I know ALL too well how annoying it is to look up your symptoms on WebMD and diagnose, but I have searched the internet and it seems that Skeeter might have eczema. I have been told all sorts of remedies, including using USED motor OIL on him but I can't see how that would possibly help. I am going to another vet this week and suggest that it could be eczema. I am at my wits end, hence the rambling in this thread but it just makes to sick to see him this way even though he is not hurting or acting funny at all. It seems purely an aesthic probem but I feel like I should figure out what it is and how to make it better. Sorry about this long post but I am ready to give him my hair! I would appreciate any and all info anyone can give me...back to researching!!! |

| Oh, poor baby. I don't have any advice, my first thought was Cushings or thyroid diseases too. Do you have access to a dog dermatologist in your area? You might try posting this in the Sick/Injured or Health/Diet forums, you might get a better reply there. If nothing else, I'll bump this back up and maybe someone will see it and have a suggestion for you. Prayers for you both, hope you're next vet visit will find an answer.

| Poor baby!!! So sorry. A little salmon oil might help. It's good for dog with dry skin and skin problems. Have you try changing his food? And I would also stop giving him any treats just for a little to see if it will help. He might be allergic to something he is eating regularly. If you have any scent candles, glade plug in or other scented oil in your house, removed them all for now. Also, avoid putting your perfume right on your chest or wrist so it won't affect him when you old him in your harms. And if it is eczema, being exposed to the sunlight will help. And gel capsule of vitamin D. Squeezed the capsule right in his mouth. I presently have a really bad case of eczema myself for the pass 2 months. Never got that before. I have been so itchy I was going crazy so I feel for your dog. [/B] After trying a bunch of useless cream and pills, I did a lots of research and found out about NOVO-HYDROXYZIN. I am now on it and my eczema is under controlled.[/B] I am still a little itchy but the horrible rash I had all over my body is gone, thank good. Tnning bed also help but obviously not the best idea for a dog... They also use NOVO-HYDROXYZIN for dogs so I would strongly recommend you to ask you vet for it. Also, an allergy test and maybe allergy shots might help your dog a lot. Best of luck to you and let us know if you found a good cure as there is so many dogs out there with the same problems... |
