| Toads must taste pretty bad! Last night I took Reesie out for her late potty and since it was warm out, if 59 can be called warm, she saw a small toad on the porch and before I could stop her she pounced and gave it a little bite. Her reaction was sudden and violent, shaking her head back and forth and really hating what wound up in her mouth. The toad had the white foam mucous on it and there was quite a bit in her mouth. We rinsed her mouth out and she licked a damp cloth for quite a while. I checked and I'm pretty sure it was Fowler's Toad, common here in Michigan. A web site said that all toads are poisonous to dogs so called the vet and they disputed that, saying she would be ok, just do what we had already done. She threw up once last night and we were watching her carefully but she seems fine. I know the southern states have somes poisonous toads but was wondering if anyone else around here has had a similar toad experience with their little one. |

| My friends dog in Florida decided to bite a frog last month , she lives in florida, it was a very costly dessert for Coalie.... he was at the vets overnight and 1500.00 to cure him, I guess it was some kind of poisonus frog

| I am so happy your baby will be ok. One of my mom's friend's poodle bit a frog, and wasn't so lucky. This happened in Florida. I guess I will look at frogs like I do snakes...they are all bad.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Absolutely! Nolee is constantly attacking the toads in the yard! Yes, he does act the same way. I also rinse out his mouth as soon as I can. I guess it is not too bad, because he continues to attack them. I did ask my vet here and she also said that the Louisiana toads are not poisonious! I guess I would know by now, because, thank goodness Nolee is just fine!

| She's doing ok. Even threw her squeaky toy at my feet and yapped at me to play. Reesie, Cindy, and Tink (the cat) were all playing Pied Piper today, following me everywhere. I must have had four legs in another life. It's 60 out there today so I'll have to watch tonight for homeless toads so it doesn't happen again, but I don't think she'll bite another one! |

The Michigan toads are not poisonous, but the substance they excrete is toxic to their small predators and the small size of our babies makes them very susceptible to this toxin. It won't poison them, but will make them sick.

| I think most toads secrete some kind of toxins but most won't actually kill them. My dog is always chasing frogs/toads. Our yard is full of them a lot of the time so I never let him outside by himself. The 1st time I caught him messing with one it was dark and I saw him pick something up then drop it really fast an jump back. his mouth was all foamy. We washed his mouth out and he was fine. I've caught him chasing little tree frogs a bunch of times and he still sniffs the big toads, I think he'd try them again if I didn't run him off, but since the 1st time I watch him pretty close. |
