| Puppy regressing? I'm sure this has been posted many times - we all sem to have the same issues at one time or another... anyway... My first real post. We've only had our Mandy 2 weeks. When we got her (at 12 weeks) she would go outside - with much coaching. Now, for the last week, she flat refuses. I have stayed outside with her for more than 30 minutes. You know what's coming, we come in and she has no problem peeing instantly. We are trying to cross train her - to go out and use peepads. Now my next issue - she will pee on the pad - no worries - but always poops wherever she takes a notion. I've tried many things.... any hints? Thank you so much. We love our little baby. I know she is just a pup - I just want to train her well. I don't want her to have bad habits because I didn't do it right.

| Kimbo is only potty pad trained, so I can't speak for training outdoors. I can tell you that we trained him in the summer when the kids and I were home from school. We got him @ 8weeks old. He was restricted to only the living room. We put the potty pad smack dab in the middle of the room. He was never left in the room without a "babysitter". Every 10 minutes or so for the first week we put him on the pad and said, "Kimbo POTTY". He was praised and treated for potty. The next week it was every 15-20 min. He was treated with a kibble everytime he pottied (big or little). He got the hang of it after a month. That's when we started shifting the potty pad position. Now, it's in a corner, out of sight. It took a full 2weeks to creep it over 10 feet. Almost with every potty pad move, he had a poop accident. It's funny how the slightest change can throw them off! He's 5 months old now and now has access to the living room and hallway. He is 99% trained. It was a slow, arduous process, but effective. |

| It sounds like we have puppies around the same age; my Daisy was born 6/9/09. I decided this time around that I would paper train first, then worry about the outdoors once we had an actual habit forming. When the puppy is free in the house, I have to watch her like a hawk so that when she squats I can zoom in and direct her to the appropriate place before she goes. It all happens so fast, there is just no way I can get her out the door in time for her to connect the dots. Does that make sense? I follow that up with a treat and a good girl! Daisy is now 80% trained to pee on the pad but will also poop wherever she happens to be standing. Good thing it is such a tiny mess, huh? I actually consider this to be great progress for her at such a young age. My first Yorkie took just over a year to be totally consistent going to the bathroom outside. Welcome to YT!

Donating YT 500 Club Member | We all want to do it right, however these little stinkers have their own version of right. I swear their make up their own potty training rules & can change them on a dime. It's going to take time & lots of patience. Keep working at it. Roxy went back & forth between doing excellent & not good at all. Very frustrating. We got her in the dead of winter & way to cold to go outside, so we used pee pad. Once weather was warmer, she didn't know what to do outside. After her shots were completed, took her to daycare. By the second time, she had it figured out what to do outside. Then it was a combination of using both pee pad & outside. The pee pad is still down & she hasn't used it in months. A doggie door that she really enjoys just sort of finished the training. When she has the urge, she goes out. Winter is coming & I don't know how she will do her first real winter, so pee pad is there in case she wants to use it. It can be done. I've noticed when she goes out she never pees & poops in the same spot. I have wondered if that's why they don't want to poop on the pee pad. She would sometimes, but often would not. Hang in there!

| My first yorkie, Truffles, was 10 weeks old when I brought her home. Within the first month, she was 95% potty trained to go outside. Now, she is 9.5 months old. In my opinion, she is almost a perfect dog. A month ago, we bought another yorkie puppy to be a companion to Truffles. Lexi comes from a long line of champions. She was 14 weeks old, and was told she was almost completely potty trained. Lexi has a long ways to go in being totally potty trained. I am having a very tough time with her potty training. She poops and pees almost anywhere she feels like. I have been using the same techniques as I used with Truffles, but definitely different results. Both dogs are pure breeds, and I thought Lexi would be smarter and easier to train due to her champion blood line. It seems to be the opposite. |

| Thanks, everyone. All helpful in helping me feel better. Mandy does not know any room with carpet - at least not without the benefit of her crate. She is confined to the Kitchen/dining room with are tiled - and the hall and bath when we are getting ready for bed. We converted our garage to a rec room so she has free reign there and the outside it's attached to. That is where we spend most of our time so she is not banished from the family. I think in the two weeks we've had her, I've have spent 30 minutes in the living room. As far as being pure bred - she is - and I find pure breeds harder to potty train than mutts. Hands down. I am convinced mutts are smarter - or at least they are more eager to please. I've had both in the past, and so far this is true for me. My mutts are potty trained with 2-3 weeks - all done, 100%. Pure breeds - forever! And I think Mandy is just proving me right (I wanted to be wrong so badly). She is only my second pure breed though. She is my first yorkie this young, so I wasn't really sure. I had rescued an 8-month old boy Yorkie years ago and had him trained fairly quickly. So, I think, based on comments here, we need to concentrate on pad training first then outside. My other Yorkie would have rather died before going in the house, but I don't think I will be that lucky with Mandy. With him we lived where they have 4 real seasons - including snow - and he still went outside. Now we live in SoCal - almost perfect weather year round. But we visit my partner's parents in the snow often - so I really feel she'll freak out there and needs to be pad trained before we get to their home for Thanksgiving... I think that deadline is wishful thinking... but I'm trying. Thanks again - I love this site!!

| I too was having a tough time with potty training GiGi, she would just squat so fast and be done by the time I got there. I just started the "how to housebreak your dog in 7 days" program, and my goodness, what a total turn around. She is like a totally different baby! Before, I let her pretty much have the run of the front of the house, and what a little sneak. I found poop presents behind my couch and television, and LOTS of it. My front entry is kinda dark, so when my dh came home from work he would have to reach inside and turn the light on so he could make sure GiGi didn't leave any presents laying around...lol I gotta tell you, I have a totally new baby, when I take her out to potty I will take a beggin strip (I know, those are horrible treats but my dh insists they LOVE them, which they do...lol) and when she goes potty, I will break off the tinest of pieces and shower her with praise and give her that tiny treat. Now, after she does a little potty, she runs over to me and sits looking up at me ready for her tiny treat...lol Also, she now comes when I call her, rather than before when she would just walk the other way...lol This training is a pretty strict schedule but man, am I seeing amazing progress!!!

| You are confusing her by trying to outdoor and pee pad train her at the same time. Pick one method and stick with it until she gets the hang of it. |

| Thanks, Blessed - I agree about the treats being bad - but it's a treat - not a meal... so I don't worry about that. Ladymom - I agree! So we are going to concentrate on pad training right now. At this point - I don't care which- just pick a spot and maintain... LOL... and I'll be thrilled!!

| Training Truffles to go potty was tough for the first week. Then, I also bought a book on potty training and was very strict with her. She took to it very well, but then she was my only baby. As stated in my first post, she was potty training with a month... Now with Lexi, I am also strict, but hard when Truffles has so much freedom....Lexi also wants to play like Truffles. Also....what are your thoughts on having two dogs vs. one? |

| Shoot - I should have asked this in my first post - if I don't get responses - I'll start a new thread.... Since we have now decided to pad train vs outside - since it will be easier when going to Grandma's in the mountains..... Do you have issues with the babies understanding pad vs throw rugs? she pees on pads (still trying to get her to poop on them) - and any exposed throw rug - no matter what color or texture.... I hear dogs are actually being trained to potty on "texture" - so rugs may be mistaken for pads - but in her case any texture is good - but she does recognize smaller cut sizes that resemble pads..... Any hints there?
