| Help, Scared yorkie! Hi, Im sitting here with my 3y old yorkie 'Lola' and she is shaking and panting so hard, because there are some fireworks going off around our area...not directly outside and i have the TV up louder.....I don't really know how to calm her. I worry too that cuddling her (thats what im doing) will only feed this behavior? It's not even November 5th yet, any one have this before and know what to do? She's really scared, climbing on me and won't leave my side. laura xxxx |

| Do you have a tight T-shirt or even an ACE bandage you can wrap around her? Something tight seems to calm them, like swadling a baby. Other than that, I just raise the sound level on the TV ... What's going on in your neck of the woods that there's fireworks at this time of year? |

| Yes cuddling her might reinforce the behavior. she might like a crate or a small box to hide in. Perhaps in the bathroom or wherever it is the quietest. You should try tio just sit back and relax so she does not feed off of your nervousness. |

| I have a 3 year old male who is so scared of fireworks! He shakes, trembles, cries, and tries to hide under furniture. When I mentioned this to my vet he reccomended that I give him children's Benadryl and it worked! This was the first 4th of July that he was actually calm. He didn't want to go outside while it was going on, but in the house he was calm and sleepy.

| Fireworks can be tramatic to a dog. My daughter lives in Florida. She had to go out for about an hour and put her dog in his metal crate. She knew he was scared of fireworks but figured the crate was the safest place for him. When she returned in about an hour there was her dog attached to the crate. He had tried to chew his way out of the crate and got the metal crate embedded in his gum. She could not separate the crate from the dog and ended up going to the emergency vet with dog attached to crate. The vet said they may have to put him to sleep. My daughter paniced and he said "lets see what we can do." After a lot of work and the loss of several teeth plus a lot of stitches, they got the dog from the crate. She had to watch him as she thought he was dying. He would not eat or drink so she had to force him. Finally, on the fifth day he started eating and drinking again on his own. She learned her lesson never to leave him in a crate when the firecrackers are going off.

| We had fireworks and a parade last night because of Homecoming at the High School last night. I didn't know about the fireworks so wasn't prepared. Gunnar just looked around. He wasn't scared. I was very happy. My chi used to go nuts on the 4th of July. I had to get him something from the vet. Wish I'd known about the benedryl, would have been a lot cheaper! thanks for sharing that. We had a small earthquake last week and Gunnar didn't react to that either. Is he laid back or what?! Donna

| Put a tight shirt on her and that should help calm her. My Bogey is just like that with fireworks and thunder. I put a shirt on him and it really does help to calm him. They also sell jackets made specifically for this that almost look like a doggy straight jacket. They are make to fit very snugglie around the body to help sooth the anxiety. Here is one but I have seen others in the past too. Anxiety Wrap. X-Small - Dog Supplies

Yeah we have bonfire night on November 5th....so as soon as fireworks go on the shelfs, people start using them...this will go on most weekends till new year now... Maybe Lola will get used to them, Im sure she wasn't as bad last year. Thank you everyone again! Laura xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx |

| I just went thru this last night with my Yorkie "Boo". Here in NC fireworks are available just across the SC border cheap and they are very loud. Locals don't seem to need a holiday to set these off. I had gotten a walking vest with Velcro at Walmart for under ten dollars which I put on him like a thunder vest. It did help. |

| I think it's alright to comfort your little one during times that can be truly frightening for them, like fireworks; I think most of us have experienced nervousness during a severe thunderstorm or two...! However, in addition to providing a bit of security and telling her in matter-of-fact voice, " You're alright...", you may want to try and distract her with an unusual squeaky toy or favorite treat or even a YouTube video of cats meowing! |
