| UGHH Teenie yorkie sold/dies...... Friend of a friend buys a yorkie for his wife, the dog is tiny and it dies overnight. The husband talks to the breeder and gets a replacement dog. They call me for advice. They refuse to tell me how small the dog is but they do say it is 9 weeks old. OMG they paid 2 thousand dollars for a teenie 9 week old dog. Do they seriously know anything? I am so mad. Why do people pay 2,000 for a dog from a breeder that claims to be AKC. Any responsible dog would not let a dog go home so early. They think everything is ok because this dog is eating....OMG.....I hate this. My question is does AKC have a standard for when the dog should be able to go home? 12 to 14 weeks? |

| i don't know about AKC but over here, 8weeks is legal to be sold or I would say puppies that have gone through 2 vaccinations will be legal to sell to customers...I think.

| The legal requirements vary by state. and none of them take into account breed differences. Which is how the puppy mills get away with so much. grrrrrrr.

| Sandyapk is a personal friend of mine and knows all about responsible breeders and the laws in California. Since I'm YTCA she's also familiar with the Code of Ethics and Conduct. I think she's venting and wondering why there are breeders out there, where their only concern is to sell puppies. Sandy as long as there are people that are uneducated they will continue to fuel the unethical breeder. My concern is if they replaced the pup with another pup from the same litter? I'm wondering why our mutual friend didn't call me?

There are many people out there that think that it is ok to buy a toy puppy at 8 or 9 weeks of age, heck I did too. All you can do is educate them, some get it and some don't.

| Mardelin, Yep I was venting. I don't know why he did not call you. He never returned my texts after a couple of them. I told them to get nutrical, and watch it's gums, and if it seemed wobbly. He would only say the replacement puppy was little. He saw Mia when she first came home, and he said this one is smaller. OMG!! Less than 2 1/2 pounds. The owner of the dog is a business woman. I hope she will just take this puppy with her to make sure it eats often. I wanted so bad to say give it to me for a month. At least I could make sure it ate, and try to keep it alive. Yes we all made mistakes early on. I just felt horrible to hear the first one died, so they just replaced it so quickly. My heart tells me the first one did not have to die if the breeder was more responsible and kept that puppy with it's mom and liter mates. Just made me sad/angry. Thanks for understanding Mary. |

I cannot believe that they just went right back and got another one the same age. But maybe now with some guidance this one will be OK. | |

| That is so tragic. I just don't understand what the appeal is in a tiny puppy. I've seen 'teacup' dogs and they usually look...Weird. Not proportionate.

"•Don't expect to bring home the puppy until its eight to 12 weeks of age. Puppies need ample time to mature and socialize with its mother and littermates. " American Kennel Club - Facts and Stats Seems they are inferring that 8 weeks would be long enough to mature and socialize! Maybe we all need to write to AKC and ask that they revise their site to at least include a statement about toy breeds requiring the longer end of that time frame. I think too often, people think it is fine to sell any dog over 8 weeks, not taking into account the differences between breeds. Hope your "friend of a friend" has a better experience with the new puppy.
