| Hello All! HI! This is my first post and I look forward to getting to know all of you. I have two 1 yr. old Yorkies named Jasper and Corky. They are a COMPLETE handful and at times I wonder what I've gotten myself into, but I wouldn't trade them for the world. The story of how I attained these two little balls of energy is kind of strange though. I had wanted a Yorkie for years. I remember the first one I ever saw, and from that point I was Yorkie-hooked! I read everything about them that I could find and dreamed of the day I would have one of my own, but I never had the funds to get one. A couple of years ago, my family adopted a Beagle mix puppy from a rescue shelter. His name is Sammy. Last September, my family was forced to evacuate from Hurricane Gustav and then about a week later, evacuated again for Hurricane Ike. For the Ike evacuation, we decided it was better to leave Sammy with my Dad (who is an emergency responder and had to stay behind) since Sammy didn't handle the first evacuation very well. My Dad's home is well built, with a fenced in yard and was out of the path of the major damage zone, so we felt confident he would be in good hands. The night we dropped Sammy off, we were backing out of the driveway and my five-year-old daughter rolled down the window and shouts to my Dad, "Take good care of Sammy and don't let him run away!" Well, the Hurricane hit, and a day later I get the call from my Dad that Sammy got away from him and ran away. He spent that entire day roaming the neighborhoods looking for him and called the local shelter to see if he'd been picked up, but had no luck and was certain that Sammy was long gone. He said he was going to get my daughter another dog before we returned home and we started talking about different dog breeds. I off-handedly mentioned that I had always loved the Yorkshire Terrier, but they were always too expensive. Well, he went out and got a Yorkie! When we got home, we found that our house was too damaged to live in, so we stayed with my parents and the new Yorkie (named Winkie by my daughter). The schools opened back up after about a month, and on my daughter's first day back, we got called by the school to tell us that there was a stray dog on the playground that she was insisting was her lost dog! Sure enough, Sammy found her on the playground that day! We brought him home (we were back in our own house at this point), but our fence was still badly damaged. We kept him next door at my in-laws house. Since Sammy had been returned, my Mother (who had fallen irrevocably in love with Winkie) asked if they could keep the Yorkie. I was very disappointed, but relented. Meanwhile, Sammy is getting utterly spoiled rotten by my mother-in-law, to the point where he no longer listened to us, or wanted much to do with our family for that matter. So we were now essentially dog-less, even though we technically owned 2 dogs! My Dad knew how upset I was over the situation, so he went out and got me a Yorkie for Christmas! I was completely estatic! I named him Jasper and we moved father north where we don't have to worry about Hurricane evacuations anymore! Whew! Well, the story doesn't end here. In case you're confused by now, I'll catch you back up...my in-laws have Sammy the Beagle, my parents have a Yorkie named Winkie, and I have a Yorkie named Jasper. But my sister... She had been overcome with the same Yorkie madness that overtook me and my parents and wanted one so badly she couldn't see straight! My dad refused to shell out the dough for a third Yorkie, and she wasn't able to afford one on her own, so you'd think all hope was lost, right? Wrong! I was talking to a lady where I work and she mentioned that her husband had gotten her a Yorkie for Christmas also, but her other dog couldn't stand him, and tried attacking him all the time. She asked if I knew of someone who was looking for one because she didn't want to drop him off at a shleter! I asked her how much money she was asking for him, and she said that if it was a good home, she would give him away for free. FREE! So I called my sister, who squealed with delight and agreed to take him. His name is Corky. I brought him to her on New Year's Eve (if you're keeping track, this entire story took place in a matter of a couple of months! Talk about an emotional rollercoaster!) So, all is well, everyone in my family has the dog of their dreams! Then, about a month ago, my sister calls to tell me that she's moving into an apartment that doesn't allow dogs, and could I take Corky back. Days before this, my husband and I were talking about wanting another Yorkie, to keep Jasper company while we are away at work and keep him better stimulated. I happily agreed to take Corky! We are having some major issues adjusting to being a 2-Yorkie family, but I couldn't imagine it any other way! |
