| Hello.. 8 week old tiny yorkie.. any tips in training/obedience etc? I just got a 8 week old Yorkie today. His mom weighs about 5lbs and the dad weighs about 3.5lbs. I am very excited about raising my new pup. I am going to start potty training him ASAP! Any tips or certain procedures that work would be greatly appreciated!! |

| General Lee, who is now 2 years old, was only 6 weeks old when we brought him home. I put a play pen with papers next to my bed. He slept with us, but when he would wake up I put him into the pen and he was not allowed out until he went on the papers. We did have some accidents, non on the bed, but with in no time he was on potty pads and outside. We get some pretty cold days here during the winter and I found that the potty pads work well. He still uses them early in the morning or in the middle of the night. When he had an accident we diverted his attention and cleaned it up. We have never yelled or done any thing negative to him when he has had an accident. Lots and lots of praise (still do) when he went on the pad and I gave him cherrios as a treat. |

| Hi congrats on your new furbabie, just curious why the breeder let the puppy go at 8 weeks that is very young, they usually do not let them go til at least 12 weeks, by then they have learn some from their mother, breeder and siblings

| I would just be sure to have pp pads in every room you plan to have him in. As he gets older & learns more, you can gradually take them up from all the places you don't want & eventually just leave them where you will plan to have them. If you want to also train him to go outdoors, you can but I would wait until he's a few more weeks older for outside, especially if he hasn't had all his shots yet. I wouldn't stress or push him too much just yet since he is a little young to be away from mommy. Focus on making him feel secure in his new home, give lots of time & attention to him and you'll be just fine. Good luck!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Most 8 week old puppies are still with their mommies and littermates. The way breeders "train" is just to keep them in a x-pen with lots of papers or pee pads. Gradually, you reduce the number of papers or pee pads. You must remember that a 8 week old yorkie is much different than an 8 week old lab, who is ready to leave mom at that age. If you try to crate train, you will need to let her out at least once every hour, her bladder is too small to hold it any longer than that. No matter what anyone says, do not restrict water, puppies can become dehydrated very rapidly and this can be deadly. Your job is to make your puppy feel secure, and unafraid of humans, as well as keeping her safe from all the hazards in the enviorment. I think as she gets closer to 12 weeks you might try crate training, and this is especially good overnight, but you still need to take them out of the crate at least once at this age. Urine production slows down at night so they can hold it longer, and when you take her out, you should place her either outside or on a pee pad, and praise her and give her a small treat, like a cheerio. During the day you can either keep her in a small crate and take her out hourly and after she goes pee, she can have a few minutes of supervised play outside the crate. Otherwise you can just use the x-pen method with the pee pad. If she's ever our of the x-pen make sure a pee pad is close to her, they won't go very far to seek them out.

| Congrats!!! Just remember puppy has to go potty when he wakes up, has had a play time, 5-10 min after he eats, and basically every other 20 min LOL Have fun, get super excited when he does what you want, and buy a good cleaner

| advice Congratulations on your new baby! I would go ahead and start w/ crate training and leaving in overnite (abt 5-6am) or whenever you get up.Line the crate w/ newspaper, also feed them in the crate. He will learn that that is his "den" which is a natural place for dogs that signify's safety. I wouldn't get the pup get used to sleeping w/ you they don't know when/when not to poop at first. After you become more comfortable w/ housetraining then I would go ahead and allow them more freedom. The best thing is to have a schedule for eating, waters, naps and potty time. Give him huge amnt of praise when he does what he is supposed to. The smaller dogs have VERY SMALL bladders and training can be hard especially when you're getting him so young and hasn't finished his training from his mother, but if you are patient and persistent it will all work out. Hopefully you don't get too frustrated---it is equivalent to having baby of your own--much responsibility butit is fun and is a journey. You shld feed twice daily and probably do a mix of puppydry/moist foor or jst wet the dry and let it sit to soften awhile prior to feeding; right after he eats take OUTSIDE start to use the same word to signify what you are going outside to do "POTTY" works well also. If you absolutely CANNOT take outside after meals then leave them crated until you can. Goodluck again |

| consistency consistency consistency Ella is 99% potty trained and I contribute it to the fact that as sooooooooon as I got her I put her in the grass, without even going inside first and I set out there with her until she pottied. Then I gave her a treat and lots of love and we went in. They say first impression does the trick!!!! Also, if its possible, (which it was with me because I got Ella in the summer when I dont have work/school) be with him/her every second of every minute of everyday. Catch them in every single accident so they NEVER have time to finish and say "NO" very loudly (dont yell like you're angry..... just loud and firm) and rush him/her outside and say potty. Of course, this isn't always possible. But whatever you do, be consistent. Congrats on the new puppy!!!!!!!!!!!

| You have gotten so much good advice here I'll try not to repeat. Just a couple other things, with their tiny bladders, he will have to go a lot, but don't worry, this slows down as they grow. Don't give him too much freedom, cause as accidents happen, the scent will keep bringing them back to go again. Be patient; Yorkies can be hard to house break, and some take up to a year. Good luck, and enjoy your lil darling.

| The trick is to not give them any opportunities to have an accident. The more they go in the right place the quicker they learn. Enjoy your puppy! |
