| Sad News Hi, I just found out today that the puppy I chose for our family had to be put down due to liver shunt. Her breeder emailed me today. She was supposed to come home at the end of the month. She kept telling me that she was not gaining weight and was smaller than what we had initally wanted. (I have a teenager and a 15 lb Westie). I posted her pic a couple of days ago in a thread "Help me Choose". She was the cutest little thing. So I guess my choice is made for me. I feel very sad. Thanks for letting me vent. |

| I am sorry this happened but it is better to find out now then later. Did your breeder give any indiction on why they couldn't do surgery on the puppy?

| I am very sorry that this has happened to the puppy that you chose, it makes me so sad. I agree with other posters here, I wouldn't buy the littermate, and would look for a new breeder all together. I am also wondering why they didn't opt for surgery, or give the puppy to someone who would be willing to have the surgery done, or even a yorkie rescue group. IMO putting the puppy down should be a last resort the surgery has pretty good success rate

| I am so sorry to hear about your little puppy. I agree you should look for another breeder, although it is hard to find a good one in this area. I went to KY to find my little girl, but I have heard of a few in WV that sound good. Good luck in your search and I hope you find that special little one!

| I am very sad for you and your family....I am sure you already felt bonded and will fill the lose. Our vet who is Wonderful!!!! has 3 yorkies and she got to (litermates) because they had brought them in to be put down and she rescued them and had the surgery done....they are both just fine now. I pray you find the perfect baby for your family.

| I'm not knowledgeable about liver shunt; she just assured me that had there been even a small chance of her getting well; she would not have put her down. I knew liver shunt was bad but I didn't know it was a death sentence, I guess. She then said that the other girl was now mine; I paid a deposit some time ago with the understanding that I had a choice to make. To be honest, I hadn't thought about not purchasing the sibling - food for thought. They did have different Mother's if that makes any difference. Same father. Thanks for your kind thoughts. My son is very sad; he had her picture printed out and was all ready for her to come home. I will need to do some thinking. I know that I do have an opportunity to have the other girl checked by my vet within that first week. I already have her food bowls; crate; toys . . . . She seems very nice and very sad over this whole thing. I went to her house twice; it is definitely no puppy mill. She has a few yorkies and 2 females that she breeds. They live in her house; not out back in some shed . . . . I'm hoping this is just a very unlucky accident. I will give her a call and talk with her. I've waited so long for the right yorkie; searched until I found a breeder I liked . . . . well - you know how I feel. I definitely did not rush into this; I waited for one of her pups - months - because she seemed so right. Thank you for your advice. I will be keeping it in mind. |

| I guess there is really alot to think about, If you feel that the other puppy is the right one for you and decide to go ahead on her then just be sure to have bile acid tests done, after 16 weeks of age. There is still not an exact understanding of how LS is passed on, but because the high occurance in yorkies, we know that there is a genetic link. A good breeder would have both parents fixed and no longer breed from that line. The whole idea is to quit breeding dogs that carry this or pass it on so that less future dogs and owners have to suffer through the heart break of ls and other liver problems. Most cases there is something that can be done and most LS dogs that have the surgery can live a normal life after, it is so sad to see a puppy sick with liver problems Please just follow your heart and keep us posted best of luck with your decision

I would not take the sibling either. LS is somewhere in the parents lines and the other pup may be affected. New research coming out (by Dr. Center) says that bile acids testing is not totally accurate until 20 weeks when the liver is fully developed. So even if the pup is bile acids tested, you still don't have a guarantee unless the breeder keeps pup for awhile.

Good advice! Even though they do have different mothers I'd ask for a refund and find another breeder. | |
