| New to the site and the world of yorshire terriers Hello to all of you, I just wanted to introduce myself. I am new to message boards and new to this site. I am a single parent to a wonderful daughter, who is now 21 years old and out on her own (i'm so proud of her). I have been wanting a Yorkshire Terrier for a couple of years. It is hard to find a breeder in my area and a price that I can afford, without going to the wrong type of breeder. I may have found a breeder but still have many questions that I am researching. She is due to have her puppies any day now. I hope to bring my new puppy home at the end of December! I am so excited!! This site looks like it will give me a lot of information so I will be browsing it on a daily basis. I have so much to do to prepare and looking forward to every minute of it!! (I almost don't know where to begin!!) Suzette Livermore, California |

| How exciting and welcome to YT. I know you will learn a lot while here and make a lot of new friends. I have one question - you said that she is due any day now and you will be bring home the new puppy the end of Dec. Will your puppy be 12 weeks old? It is best with yorkies to wait till they are 12 weeks min. before leaving their breeder's home. There is so much they can learn still from their mom, since they are a terrier. So for socialization. And best to wait for another reason - since yorkies are prone to getting hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) if they leave too young. Just changing homes at a young age can be stressful for them and can drigger an attack. Due to these two reasons many breeders will keep yorkie pups till they are at least 12 weeks of age. It just makes adjustment for the pup and new owner so much better. I think if timing is right - that would be 12 weeks old, but just wanted to make sure you knew about this to make sure. One thing I do when we have pups is to walk on my hands and knees where the pups will play and get exercise. This allows me to puppy proof the area. Cords, pieces of things, corners, etc... Again - big congratulations!! Welcome!! Last edited by topknot; 10-03-2009 at 06:02 AM. |

| I'm not sure how old the puppies will be. The breeder just said "around Christmas". I don't want to get the puppy too early, for the reasons you mentioned. So, if I have to wait a little while longer that will be fine. I have already found a ton of useful information on this site! The only concern I have with this breeder is her pets are not AKC registered, but CKC registered. Last edited by Suzetteb523; 10-03-2009 at 07:32 AM. |

| It is always recommended Not to bring home a new puppy at Christmas time. Too much going on - not best for a new pup. Too many people want to hold them, too many people maybe coming into your home at once, or if you go to other people's home, pup is left alone too much. I would wait till after the holidays to bring a pup home. Less problems you would have to encounter with a new pup. |

| Hi and Welcome to YT!! CKC is the worst! From what I understand.. only needs 2 signatures stating the dog is purebred to register with them.. You've learned a lot already I would be concerned too. Most using that registry has been suspended from AKC. Even if it wasn't her that was suspended, but who ever she purchased hers from. Be very leary! Talk to her Vet, get references, go see her in person, and check the AKC suspension list located on this site. I do know some breeders in CA if you PM me we can visit. |

| I too only have AKC and would only buy AKC. I heard about one person that was able to register their found off the streets dog (looked like a yorkie) with CKC (Continental). They just had to send in 2 photos and a paragraph stating why they thought it was full blooded. No proof what so ever, no parents know.... how crazy. Great advice - Always throughly check out your breeder before buying, check out their guarantees, be sure to have a contract where everything is written out, check their home and parents of pups. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Hi and welcome to YT! You will find lots of great information here. The first place i'd go when looking to purchase a yorkie is the yorkie club site. Yorkshire Terrier Club of America there is a lot of information there about the breed. they also have breeder club members listed who abide by the standard. Yorkshire Terrier Club of America About The Club these are the first breeders i would personally check with. you mentioned you found a breeder that has CKC registered puppies. i wouldn't purchase a pupped that was registered ckc for reasons already mentioned. I'd look for an AKC registered puppy. Look around here on YT for more information on the breed and where to purchase from.

| Thanks for the advice. I don't have anything going on during the Christmas holidays. I don't celebrate anymore since my daughter is all grown up. I use the days off for quiet time. No visiting. Just relaxation off from work. That's my treat. And a perfect time to bond with a new puppy since I will be able to have uninterrupted bonding time for about a week. |

| Just wanted to say, Welcome. You're getting a lot of good input and advice, there's little I can add. Our Christmas isn't as hectic as some either. We got Yogi on Halloween last year. Imagine coming to your new home and having all those 'scary' people coming to your door all night long. He's a trooper though, and was quite eager to greet every one. Good luck on your search, look with her head as much as with your heart.

| Sorry, the last message was posted for the comment about bringing home a puppy around the holidays but I forgot to send out a BIG thank you to all the repliers and support and information. It is very much appreciated. Amazing Yories, I sent you a private message. It has been so hard finding a breeder but I will rethink my options (re akc vs ckc). Thanks again!! Suzette |

| Welcome! I can see you're learning a lot already about the breed. Terrific! They are just wonderful companions and they have so much love to give. I don't know what I would ever do without Calleigh. Have you picked out any names yet? Enjoy your new baby. I'm sure you won't want to leave his/her side. He/she won't want you to either.
