| New Name? Hi everyone. I have been thinking about something in the last few days and would like your opinion on it. We have had our beautiful little Fiona for a few months now. She is 5.5 months old. I took a long time in naming her. I finally settled on Fiona Faith Grace of Amazing Grace. I know it is a long one! The problem is no one calls her Fiona! I realized a few days ago that I only use her name is when I am talking to a human about her. My youngest can't say Fiona or won't and he calls her puppy. My oldest doesn't like her name and he calls her ponie. I usually call her pretty girl!! Now, I know that it is important for us to use her name so she will come to it. I just didn't realize how little we used it. I have tried to call her to come to me using her name today and she doesn't come. She doesn't even look at me! What do you think, should we change it? Maybe try something that everyone likes and can say, or would that really mess her up. My oldest likes Grace and my little one can say that. It is the road we live on which is named after my grandmother (now gone) Grace. It is already in her written name and I have always wanted a little girl Gracie! Anyone ever changed their dogs name?? I don't want to mess her up for life but we may have already done so! Thanks Ashlee |

| It will be fine...go ahead and change it, you will be surprised how quickly she will adjust. When i rescued Molly at 2 years old, she was called Bubbles. She got used to the new name really quickly. My previous dog was called Lady and was 10 years old when i rescued her. I changed her name to Willow and she soon got used to that. |

| Go ahead and change it! Dogs are good w/ that kind of stuff. My dad and stepmother adopted a dog who they changed his name to Duke. He was a year old when they rescued him. He never responded to Duke and they just started calling him Buddy... so that's his name now!

Donating YT 500 Club Member | But if you do someday have a human girl baby, you'll have two Graces. Does that work for you? You should come up with a name though that all of you can use to prevent confusion for her though. It's hard isn't it? Good luck!

| Thanks everyone. I hadn't even thought of dogs that go to new homes getting new names. When we got our Sam his name was Prancer. The first time I saw him he was wearing a way to small raindeer outfit. He had been wearing it since they got him as a puppy! He was owned by a mentally retarded child, whos parents expected her to care for him. I will never have that human girl though. My 2 boys are it for me!! Fiona is my little girl! Yes, is so hard to name my babies!! |

| Fee Fee was a good idea but we already have a Fee Fee. A friend of mine has a little poodle Fee Fee and we see them often. |

| I think it is very easy to change a dog's name. I've known lots of folks who've done it successfully.

| I like Grace! I think Grace is such a cute name. And from her picture I could see you calling her Gracie. But maybe I'm a little bit biased because that's Bella's middle name. I think that she will do fine with the name change. When I got Bella her name was Daisy and shortly after I got her when I started calling her by her new name and praising her, she forgot all about her original name.

| your puppy will have no problem adapting. When my daughter owned my yorkie Ladybug, her name was Lady. I got her from my daughter when she was 5 months old and changed it to Ladybug. She now answers to either Lady or Bugs or Ladybug and even to Buggie Wuggie....lol

| You can try a short list of different names you like and she'll let you know which one she likes. The one she consistently responds to. Our cat Buffy was originally named something else, I can't even remember what it was now..LOL we nursed her as a foundling, so it was a name we gave her. Anyway, she flat out would not respond to it. She was probably about 5-6 mths old when we realized we were being dissed. We're not the brightest bulbs in the lamp. She ignored the name and us. We finally gave up and tried several names, each one for about a day, she ignored and ignored. One day we tried Buffy, she flipped her head around and came, and she has responded to that name ever since. She picked her own name. Took about six names for us to get it right.

Thor's Human Donating Member | She'll be fine, esp. if she doesn't respond to her name now. I volunteer at a shelter, and those dogs get at least three names: the one they originally had, the one the shelter gives them, and the one the new owners give them. Part of the doggie training we do is teaching them their new name (which to a dog just means, "look at me"). Say her new name, and give her a treat if she looks at you. Repeat at least 25 times. |

Your post and really this whole thread brings an amazing yet heartbreaking book to my mind. It was called A Dogs Life. Can't think of the author but I could find it. Anyway it is about the life of a dog told through the dogs eyes. As the dog is passed from family to shelter to family it keeps getting its name changed...so sad but so well written. I love your Buffy story. So nice you did that. I do love the name Fiona, but it is pretty important that your sweet girl comes to her name. Gracie is so beautiful too.

| Thanks everyone. I feel much better about changing her name and I think we are going to give it a try. I talked to my mom about the name Gracie but she is uncomfortable with it. My grandmother has been gone now for 4 years but it is still hard for her. Her name was Grace but my grandfather called her Gracie. It will remind her to much. SOOO! I am thinking about Carlee (my name being Ashlee) or Sophia. I once had to give up a yorkie poo that I names Sopia and it broke my heart. I think that name sounds really girlie. My boys both like these names and belive it or not my youngest can say both! I think he just wanted to call her puppy. He says sofie not Sofia. But that will probably be what she is called anyway. Of course they like Carlee to because my youngest thinks Cars and my oldest watches the tv show I Carly. I was hoping to try something a little more unique but I think if we did we would have the same problem we have now. That was a good idea to try the treats when we decide on a final name. I guess if all else fails we can always go back to Fiona! What is the vote on YT, Carlee or Sophia? These are the names we have now. Ashlee,Kevin, Garrett, Jaxon, Sam, Ella,Toby, Lilee and Fiona? |
