| Getting prepared for winter- any pointers? I just realized this will be Chloe's first winter. Is there anything besides warm clothes that I should do to prepare for winter? Anything a first time yorkie owner for thier first winter should be aware of? I just figured this could be a helpful topic for other people as well. It doesnt get too cold here in Texas

| I'm a 1st Time Yorkie owner too. Let's see..... these are the things I am doing to prepare for winter: 1. Buying holiday bows 2. Buying winter clothes, i.e. sweatshirts, fleece wear, coat, sweaters 3. New toys, for all those indoor days 4. Planning potty stradegy: I am anticipatating some resistance to cold bitter wind weather and cold hard grass up the you know what! Am I on the right track? |

| Keep in mind that your baby's coat will naturally get thicker during cold weather. Don't ask me how their bodies know, but they do. So don't worry TOO much about the sweaters. It doesn't get freezing cold much in NC, but it occasionally snows. That's really the only time Jewel wears her sweaters b/c otherwise, her coat is thick enough for the weather. JM

| Do you get snow there? My husband always took the snow shovel and made a few pathways around the yard for Boog...that way he didn't have to trudge through the deep snow...he was only 6" tall and he got lost pretty easy! Boog had a fuzzy blanket that was his favorite and he loved it when I would get it all toasty warm in the dryer for him after he went outside. Don't forget to ad a BOUNCE though...Yorkies look funny with their hair standing on end from static electricity! |

I Love Thor Donating Member | I think shoes are hilarious!! I think that when they walk in those things they look like they are about to fall over! It makes their little feet look tiny! But I guess if you are going on a long walk in ice/snow it would protect their paws. If I lived in NYC I would get some for my pup because of all the walking. I would have to drag Thor in shoes because I know he wouldn't budge! |

| Winter It will be Buddy's first winter and am looking forward to winter and fall. He loves chewing on leaves and when they fall from the trees now he gets so excited like "treats falling from the sky". He loves chasing them in the wind too. He also loves to sjust sit on the deck and blow in the wind, especially now since the air is getting cooler in Nova Scotia. After our hot summer, he's really perking up in the cooler weather. I can't wait to see his reaction to snow. Ive' heard you should try to get your puppy to walk on grass lawns and avoid the salt on the road. You can put some vaseline on their pads before they go out and rinse their feet to get rid of vaseline and any salt when you return. A warm blanket sounds nice but make sure the Bounce sheet doesn't stick to the blanket. I've heard (truth or not?) there is something bad in the sheets if your puppy should chew on them. |

| Always use pet-friendly ice-melting products on your own sidewalks or driveways so it won't harm the pets or the lawn. Sometimes that stuff is hard to find if there is snow so get some when you see it and you'll have it.

| Winter Great advice about the antifreeze and pet friendly ice melters. It's easy to forget about things like that. Thanks... |

What about getting boots? Are they helpful, or is there another way to protect the pads on her paws. I can't believe I'm worrying about snow so soon - but were known for having mid-October blizzards and early Nov heat waves to melt it.
