| SO confused I need help! Should I restrict her eating? Bailey used to eat purina pro plan (as recommended by our vet) but we decided recently to change her food, she didnt seem as enthusiastic lately about her food and being that she is 2 and 1/2 lbs we have to be careful with her. Anyway, she always has been small and thin and our vet has always said she is a good weight for her size and that she is not underweight. Bailey is almost 3 and for the last 3 years we have never bothered to portion her food, we would just fill the bowl when it was empty and she would pick at it when she was hungry. Well last week we switched her to royal canine and she hasnt stoped scarfing it! She is over 3 lbs now and dosnt stop eating (if we put food in the bowl she eats, and if we refill it she eats more) we can feel a huge difference in her weight when we pick her up and it worries me. At first we were happy about the weight gain and encourage it because it is soo stressfull having such a little furbaby but it just seems like she is gaining too much weight too quickly. Not to mention her back right knee has been poping a little so we are worried about lp. If we can tell when we pick her up that she is much heavier than that must be alot harder on her knees. So this morning I decided to not refill her bowl and start her on regularly schedualed meals but she looked at me so sad when I didnt refill her bowl this morning and my boyfriend is telling me im cruel for trying to restrict her eating... What should I do? Should I let her continue to eat when she wants? Am i over reacting to the weight gain? I dont care if shes bigger I love her no matter what but I want her to be healthy! Suggestions? comments? Any input is appreciated.

| well, first, let me say, I think your girl has MUCH better taste than your vet because purina is sort of...well....pedestrian. royan canin is what we have fed our dogs in the past (now we are on a more holistic diet, but thats cause one of them has a skin issue) and they have always loved it. Maybe your baby was thin because she didn't like her food. Maybe this change has jumpstarted her appetite. If you are worried about her knees, by all means take her to the vet, but I wouldn't suddenly stop free feeding unless he thinks she has gotten overweight (at 3 pounds!!!) and it is hurting her. She will likely level out on her own when she realizes this isn't a fluke, and you are going to keep "giving her the good stuff"

| I also forgot to say that her energy is not what it used to be. She used to be full of energy and always sprinting from one side of the house to another. She has been much lazier lately, and just all around slower.

Here's a good link that lists some myths about dog foods and why some of the grading systems that they used in the past aren't really useful. The Dog Food Project - Grading kibble - easily?

| i have the same problem with pulga, she is almost 2 (in 3 days), and since we started orijen she just eats like crazy, so i also had to stop free feeding. Now she is eating wellness weight control and is slowly going back into shape. I hate feeding on a clock, they dont act the same everyday so i like to let them decide when they wanna eat. Also, i feel that when you feed like this they will eat everything in the bowl just because they know you will take it away... I am going back to free f. soon i don't like RC either, i dunno, sometimes i read it is ok sometimes that is not, i kind of trust dogfoodanalysis.com and the way they review, and they give it 2 and 3 stars out of 6. Either way there are too many "proven" good foods to feed something there is doubts about and everyone agrees is not the best food (just my opinion of course)

| so if money isnt really an issue but time is (meaning I dont really have the time to get in the kitchen and cook homemade food for bailey) then what is the best most healthful option?
