| Traveling with your yorkie? DH and I are going to DC in October for a wedding and this will be the first time I will be away from Gizmo. We will be staying at Hotel Palomar which is a pet friendly hotel. I was thinking that we could just take him with us? The car ride would be about 7-8 hours, but then DH said that he would be left alone in the hotel almost all day long while we are there (4 days) and he would be in a strange environment so he might get really upset. If he stayed home he would be here with my mother-in-law but he is used to sleeping with us every night so it breaks my heart knowing that he is going to be so sad if I'm not here to go to bed with him! Maybe I should just not go to the wedding!!!! Oh what to do?!!

| How old is Gizmo? I think if it were me, I would take him. If you think he might be scared being in a new place, maybe you could go a day early and get him used to it? I would think it would be easier for him to be with you, even though he would be alone for that one day, he would still be with you otherwise. I think it would be easier for you too!! I can't imagine leaving mine for FOUR days???!!! I might be more spoiled than they are!

| Personally, I wouldn't take him with you if you know he's going to be left alone most of the days you are there. It simply isn't safe to leave them in the hotel room. Think of all the staff who have keys to get in a room and many hotels just don't allow them to be left alone, even if they are pet friendly. If you do decide to take him, please make sure you have him in a crate when you are not in the room. If housekeeping comes in and he is loose, they are not going to retrieve him if he gets out and they leave the door open and propped by the cart when cleaning. Most of DC isn't dog friendly. They are not allowed on any of the grassy areas where any of the monuments are - only the sidewalk. Alexandria is very pet friendly, however - with lots to do in the Old Town area with everything being pet friendly. If he stays in his own surrounding, he is bound to be more comfortable even if you aren't there sleeping with him. Would your MIL let him sleep with her?

| Hmm, tough decision. I do think dogs do much better without us than WE do without THEM, lol. I've left Jackson four-five times since I got him last December, each trip about four nights long, and he does absolutely fine. He goes and stays at my dad's house with his two doggy buddies. However, all of those trips, it wasn't really even an OPTION to bring him with me. If I had the option, I would definitely try to bring him. But if he were going to be alone in the hotel room all day, I may re-think it because then it makes it kind of pointless for him to go, ya know and he may more comfortable with your mother in law, especially if he knows her. I think it also depends on the dog though - Jackson does pretty well with change and traveling so I think he'd be totally fine. Some dogs don't like new places and get really nervous, etc. So I think it just depends on what you think Gizmo could handle. I hate leaving Jackson too but it usually goes by so quick and he hardly even knows your gone!!

| Oops. That's what happens when I don't read things right! I thought he was only going to be alone ONE day of the time you were there. If it's the entire time during the day, I agree with the wise posters here...he would be much better off staying in a familiar place! You may go through much more than he does, but it will be best for him.

l agree, they can be really adaptable especially if they have play buddies.

| Thanks guys! I didn't even think of housekeeping going in and out of the hotel room! That scares me even thinking about him getting out or possibly dogginapped! I don't think I will take him with us. Thanks for easing my mind everyone!

| My older yorkie was a very good traveler when she was younger. She would sleep on a pillow in my lap for as long as we were riding and we stopped every couple of hours to let her potty and walk. Of course we only went places where she was always with me like to relatives houses or camping. I would not take her to a motel/hotel for fear if I left her in the room someone would steal her. I would dare not take my other 3 for the same reason but also because I'm sure they would bark and get us thrown out. |
