| Harley is So Sick Hi, I am new here and this morning I am desperatly searching for help. My Harley who I have had for only 7 months is sick. He started with a fever and got worse. To make a long story short the vet has had him 4 nights with an IV in him. Cant do a complete blood workup on him to find out if he has a liver shunt but preliminary tests indicate he might. Too small to take that much blood right now. Now he has what i would call ticks, neurological, almost like a hickup. Vet does not think they are seizures. He had put him on metrozonidale and two other meds for his fever and is thinking it may be a reaction and not the liver shunt. We will get him back today and vet says he is a little better, not much, not eating. Vet wants us to take him to the University of K-State Vet College on Monday. This is going to get expensive and I know my husband will not be savy with it. Any suggestions? By the way he is only 3 lbs 2 oz and probably not even that now =( Last edited by MylilHarley; 08-15-2009 at 06:39 AM. Reason: forgot something |

| I'm sorry your little one is so sick! I'm sorry I don't have any input without more information. Sounds to me like you best take your guy to K-State if you're going to save his life, especially since your Vet is sending him home still sick and without a diagnosis or recovery. How did this start? How was he acting? Was he eating? Was the fever the 1st thing you noticed? What meds is he on? Was there blood in Urine or poop? Was he vomitting? What neurological signs is he showing? Is he walking the walls or head pressing? What blood work was done and the results? Praying for your little guy!! |

| Harley is so sick Please take him to Uof K Vet Hospital. I know it's expensive, but his life may be at stake. I know we love our local vets, but in serious cases, the veterinary colleges have so much more experience with different ailments, and are much more equiped to make a diagnosis. Running the tests probably won't won't be too terribly expensive. Needing surgery is something else. However, you don't know what he will need. Right now, he really needs a diagnosis. Tucker's Mom PS Tucker has been to two University Vet schools: University of Florida, and University of Tennessee. I couldn't have more impressed with both hospitals. I really, really believe in them for serious cases. |

| Harley basically started out with a fever. We figured it was just a virus. Called our friend, a vet, and he came over to look at him. Decided to take him to his clinic. Brought him hom with instructions to give him antibiotics Metrodizanole (liquid) and two other pills. Harley was very good when he came home, back to normal. Then the next day he went downhill again. I had given him two bouts of meds. the liquid twice, the pills once, as per doctor orders. That evening he strated having tics or neuroligical something going on. Couldnt stand up, circling, head pressing. We called him again and he came by the next morning and took him to his clinic. He has had him ever since giving iv fluids to flush him out. Thinks it might be a reaction to the metrodizanole which happens occasionally, causing neuro probs. Says blood he did take shows high liver enzymes, but cant do real test for liver shunt due to it taking too much blood for it and he doesnt think he can handle it. I had been giving him cheese eggs and beef baby food just to get him to eat. Now I am wondering if all that protein is what caused this to flare? I just dont know but I am extremely worried about getting him back today. I am so worried. |

| Probably sounds crazy Oh also, this may sound crazy but my husband had been sick with a bad virus, fever, sore throat and sinus stuff. He was with harley for 3 days straight. I found a kleenex on the floor all chewed up by Harley that my husband dropped. Next thing i know Harley is sick, running a fever, but no neurological problems. Seemed, i know it is crazy, like the exact same thing my husband had. Can dogs catch a virus from humans? Doc says not likely. But kinda strange and that is how it started. He didnt get the neurological probs until he was given the meds. But maybe it would have progressed into that anyway, i just DONT know! |

| Oh sweetie, I'm so sorry to hear about Harley! How is he doing today? I know it's expensive to have a sick pup, but knowing what is wrong so you can make a decision is better than losing him and not knowing. I'd take him if I was you. Tell your DH to consider it an early present for whatever is coming up that he'd have to get you a gift for

| Harley still sick Well the vet brought him home yesterday at noon and i was so hopeful. He was sooo much better, eating drinking. He was still walking funny. When he ran he fell over but overall it was like night and day. I was hopeful it was the metrodizanole, working its way out of his system. Well last night he seemed to go downhill. This morning he cant stand up. I am crushed. He still has the neurological symptoms. Little tics. Laying around and not eating. I am thinking once he was off the IV the symptoms are coming back. Looking like a liver shunt problem to me. The vet says liver count high but other two factors are normal... BUN? i think. Says a lot of things can cause the liver to be pissed off, how he put it. So is not a guarantee. There again, he can not do the blood test to make sure cuz he prob cant get that much blood from lil Harley. So sad today. |

| Please take him to K-State Veterinary Teaching Hospital. I've spent a lot of time there and they are fairly good at what they do. You'd have a better chance of a diagnosis if you take him there. Let me know how things work out. ~Joanne~

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Sorry to hear he is still so sick. Can your vet to an ultrasound to see if he can see a external shunt? I would get him to the Univ as soon as possible. Please keep us posted.
