YorkieTalk Newbie! | running away Hi everyone, Im new to this and excited to be able to talk to others that have the same doggy as I do. I do have a question, How do I keep maximus (max) from taking off outside and running away? We have been to training school which helped on the sit, down, easy stuff, but if he gets out my front door without a leash, he's a gonner. Several times my youngest boy has chased him to the river. He's the only one that can catch him. When he gets out, I have tried luring him back with treats, I tried to get him to chase me, Nothing works so far. It scares me to death that one day he will get out and we will not catch him. Does anyone else have this problem with their yorkies? Is this a natural thing for them? |

| Hey, Jackson doesn't generally run away. We own 3 acres and while a lot of times I will walk him on a retractable leash because IF he happens to see a bunny rabbit or something, he will run after it, but 98% of the time he won't go far. I don't think "running away" is necessarily a breed thing but I guess certain breeds who have those hunting instincts will go after a squirrel, rabbit, etc. So ya just gotta be careful with that. Yorkies were bred to kill vermin. I pretty much trust him though if he were to get off leash by accident, etc that he would come back to me, which is nice. Anyways, I would first start with practicing "STAY" at the front door. Practice over and over until he gets it. Maybe buy some sort of an ex-pen to put outside of your front door just for training so you don't risk him running off for real. But leave your door wide open and make him stay at the door. If he already knows stay, you're ahead there. Give him a treat every time he stays and doesn't run out the door. Gradually increase the stay time as he gets better. Also, maybe get a long retractable leash or rope to attach him to in your neighborhood so he gets a ton of space to roam (as if he were off leash) and practice the "come" command over and over again. Every time he comes to you, give him a yummy treat. Find the yummiest treat possible! So he knows... Oh, if I go to her, I'm going to get a treat and lots of praise! After catching him from running away, never be like "BAD dog!" or anything negative because it will make him not want to come back to you. I hope this helps a little and I hope someone else can give you more tips! Here's a previous thread I started on off-leash training: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/tra...-training.html

| I have this same problem with Piper. She's 15 months and every time she has gotten loose she runs. Luckily we have a large yard and she basically runs around the house and plays catch me if you can. She runs to the front yard and when I get there she runs to the back. She has gotten loose twice and both times have scared me big time. I had a Yorkie before her he never did that but I let him have the run of the yard with me from the beginning so it was no big thing to run when he was loose. Now 14 years later there are too many preditors around and we are surrounded by woods. I'm so afraid that something is going to come out of the woods and snatch her so I never let her loose. A coyote got our 15 year old cat a few years ago. I think she likes to run because she just never gets the opportunity to run all out. I do take her for a 3 mile walk every day so she does get plenty of exercise. I would love to hear how everyone else is able to get their baby to stop and come when their called.

| We have 2 yorkies, 9 1/2 mths old. After having the terrifying experience of Bailey running out the back door when she was 4mths old in the cold Minnesota winter when it was pitch black outside, we decided to do something different so they couldn't get away from us like that ever again. It was one by far the scariest thing we went through thinking that Bailey was going to take off & never come back to us when she was so little. My husband found her underneath a tree, as whatever she was chasing must have stopped there. NOW...We have 2 tie-outs for them to go potty outside our backdoor. I have one side of the tie-out leash clipped to the stake outside the door, and 2 little hooks in between the screen door & our main backdoor that the other end of the tie-outs rest on. We open the main door, and the screen door is still shut & the clips are there to clip on the dog's collars. So now they get clipped BEFORE we even open the door to outside. We have worked w/them at all our doors now and they do listen to stay (it takes lots of practice!), but for the backdoor, having them hooked up before they go out really makes us feel more at ease that our little babies wouldn't take off on us. We live in town & don't have a fence, so they have to be on a leash when they go outside.

YT Addict | I'm sorry I don't have any advice as I am going through the same thing. Harley will take off out the door and end up down the street. He runs faster than me so I can't catch him. The only way I can get him is to actually get in the car and drive up to him because he always wants to go for a ride. I'm terrified that he is going to end up getting hit by a car. Luckily our subdivision is new and not real busy but I am scared that once it fills up it is going to be a huge problem. Sometimes I can distract him by sitting down on the grass and calling him to come play. Hopefully you will get some good advice. I defintely need some on how to make him stay inside unless he is on a leash. |

The 3 Musketeers Donating Member | I have a Yorkie and a Cocker Spaniel who if they had the chance would run throughout the trailer park. I also have tie-outs that are put on both of them and then let them out. Even though we are rural enough to have wolves and eagles around, letting my Yorkie out with my Cocker Spaniel seems to ensure safety for my Yorkie.

| When Bailey was younger, I practiced "sit" and "stay" every day when I kissed hubby goodbye in the a.m. Now she does not go out the front door unless its okay.
