| OMG.....Help!!! I am so worried my Apple keeps gaining weight and I don't know why She's 2 yrs old and should be weighing 4 1/2 lbs. In 2 months she's gained 2 1/2 lbs and I don't know why. Vet is also worried because she has small legs and he says that's too much weight on her small knees. I just don"t understand what's going on nothing has changed I feed them twice a day 1/3 cup Natural Balance sweet potato/fish with small teaspoon of trader joe's lamb and rice canned food with a little raw oatmeal sprinkled on top. That's all she gets no treats or anything just chewing bones. All of the yorkies eat exactly same thing she's only one gaining so much weight. Vet just said she needs too lose the weight but didn't tell me how when I asked she just smiled ok that didn't answer my question I even have her on treadmull everyday for 20 min and still no weight loss Appreciate some advice

| Hey Irma Is Apple spayed? Momo has gained 1.5lbs since his neuter. I've reduced his food by 1/3 suggested by my vet & I feed mine NB SP & Venison. Mimi's daughter & son (also spayed & neutered) keeps gaining weight also...what to do. We go walking everyday for 20-30 mins. They're very active sporadically throughout the day. I've cut their treats (Fruitables) to one a day, maybe I should stop treats? Someone mentioned on YT that maybe it's their metabolism...?

| When my Bella was diagnosed with Collapsed Trachea earlier this year the very first thing my Vet recommended was for her to "lose weight". Another YTNR foster mom recommended trying Canidae Platinum (senior/over weight dogs) dry kibbles. My Vet also recommended cutting the serving size recommended on the packaged to be reduced by a 1/3. He reminded me that Dog Food companies are interested in selling more dog food and will always recommend more to sell more. In the meantime, Bella has come down from 14 lbs to 12.3 in a few short months. She was a lil' cranky at first when her meals were reduced in size...but, like humans...she adjusted and now is perfectly content with her meals. ps. Another important thing that I did was to have her Thyroid checked to rule out anything metabolic, too. She was negative. Hope this info helps you...

| First, did the vet do bloodwork? If nothing has changed and she was doing well on the amount of food you give them, then there may be a medical problem involved. If that has been ruled out, you can try a senior dog food or one meant for weight loss or you can replace some of her normal food with certain vegetables to make her feel full. If that doesn't work, she will likely need a prescription weight loss diet.

| Vet did do bloodwork that's one thing our vet always checks she's pretty good about that. Everything was fine with bloodwork. I think I'll try the Canidae Senior/overweight dry kibble. That's good idea. And, no she's not spayed. I also read on a YT post to cut food in half and put veggies. I think I will try that too. Hi Jenny! Good luck with your furbabies Thanks everyone

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Yes, I agree with this, that's the first thing I thought they checked, if food hasn't changed. Is there anyone else in the house that could be giving her extra treats that you don't know about. You know 25 calories here and there add up. When Joey needed to lose weight after a tricks training class, the vet said to cut his food by 1/3 and replace with a few frozen green beans. The green beans act as filler, and they aren't as hungry. I also use the green beans as treats; Joey loves them. Don't use the canned variety as most contain too much salt, and you don't have to cook green beans for long, just thawed, as they are precooked. Another thing, we do is play fetch at meal times, he runs and retrieves a toy for each piece of food he gets, poor baby has to work for his food, but he seems to enjoy it. I would also get a scale if I were you. I weigh Joey once a week so I know he's at a good weight and you can adjust calories through this. Joey lost about 1 or 2 ounces a week, and he had a almost a pound to lose, but losing weight slowly is the best way to go. I definitely would get the thyroid checked out. I will say, you are feeding much more than I feed Joey.

Thanks, I will make an appt and get that done. My family just told me that they have seen her eating mom's food and our chihuahua's food after she's already ate her food. I stop her everytime I see her try to even get near their bowls. GRRRRR can't believe they just let her eat away

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | He gets about 2 Tablespoons in the morning of kibble, and 2 at night with about 5-7 green beans. Before bedtime, he gets 5 more pieces of kibble. He always has a bully stick, and occasionally gets other small treats. He weighs about 5 ½ pounds, which the vet says is a good weight for him, he's not what I'd call thin, but looks perfect to me. Like I said before, if he loses a few ounces, I tend to give him a little more kibble the next week, but I've never had to give him below this amount. I think he probably has a naturally slow metabolism, and there is huge variation in individual metabolism, but he seems satisfied with the amount of food he's getting. When I babysit for another dog, Joey's up most the day, and is much more active, so I increase the food a little on account of this.
