| Potty Training Woes!!! Well...I have another question I need help with! Pancakes is 4 months, we have been houstraining him to go outside and it has been going pretty well, very few accidents (because we constiently watch him well he is out of his crate) but we are wondering how we get him to let us know that he needs to go outside to potty? We have been using the same word "outside" when we take him potty but he doesn't seem to want to ever go with us, he won't walk to the front door and normally he will run back to his bed when he sees that we are going to the front door! We live in a condo so we are finding tricky to get him houstrained and let us know when he needs to go "outside" I have heard of the bell taining (tying a bell to the front door and rining it every time you go outsie for potty) does this work? Does anyone of any ideas on how to get Pancakes to tell us when he needs to go POTTY! Thanks

♥Tiny Tia my Furbaby♥ Donating Member | My own experience was that we let Tia out the patio doors for potty and she caught on real quick and now taps the door with her paws.. If shes desperate we see her running to the patio door lol(only when she has a belly ache). Repitition is the answer and from 4 1/2 months shes never had one accident inside. Patience and praise and it will happen.

| Hi, the bell can be bought at michaels, they are medium sized jingle bells, put 2 on a key ring then put them on a fabric or leash and tie to the door. In order to get them to ring it, I would smack it, then take the puppies paws and smack it, good girl! outside! give her a cheerio, smack it again, lots of praise. A few training sessions of that and they will catch on. With Jazz she learned right away, Lex took longer but she is a pro at it now. Sometimes she smacks it just because she wants to go outside, so now when she goes tinkle I say good girl all done, when she smacks the bell 30 minutes after she has been outside I tell her all done, go play, and she gets busy with something else. I also taught Lex to bark if she wanted to go outside, I say outside, then I say ruff, ruff, that worked faster than the bell, it's all up to the dog Good luck.

| That sounds like a pretty simple solution with the bell training (fingers crossed)! I am already excited to start trying Pancakes with it! Hopefully it will make sense to him and he will get the hang of letting us know that it's potty time! Thanks for the advise!

| does anyone know exactly how long it took their bell trained yorkie to use the bell on their own? we're doing it every single time she goes out, and hubbie gets anxious and wants her to do it herself but she just sniffs it. how long?? |

The other thing is.. instead of a clicker have you tried, snapping your fingers? mine understand the snapping. See, I thought if I don't have that clicker on me than what good is it? my fingers are always there ;D so I use that instead. Just sharing.

| Jazzie came home at 4 months, so there is an age difference there. However she got it that same day, it was like she wanted to communicate so badly she was thrilled to have the bell. Lex has been with me since she was 10 weeks but it took her months. I think she knew Jazz would ring the bell so she was lazy about ringing it? not sure. Zander waits on Jazzie to ring it as well.

| Something that just came to my mind is that Lex was pi pad trained from her breeder, so I think it was not urgent for her to learn to smack the bell, she probably figured, if I can't wait for Jazz to ring the bell I'll go on the pad, I've always had a pad out for her even now when she knows how to ring the bell. Lex's breeder started the puppies on pads since they could walk, I think it is so important for their den to be clean, it seems to help with the potty training. Just my observation.

| Yes, bells work! I agree with Zander's Mom. I only let my pups out the backdoor for "potty" time, and when we started, every time I opened the door I made each pup "bonk" the bells with their nose. We would always say "bonk it!" when they stood by the door. Buster does it every time. Bailey doesn't really get it, but she tends to jump at the door when she needs to go out, so her body will hit the bells & that tells us she needs to go out. They are 9 1/2 months old now. It took probably a good month before Buster really go the hang of it. The trick is to NEVER open the door until they bonk the bell. Good luck!!
