| Yorkie puppy at 6 weeks Hi all, I am new to this forum today having spent the past few weeks using it to help me in my quest for a new yorkshire terrier puppy. I have a question which I'm sure will be a familiar one to some of you. I found a litter of Yorkies for sale in the countryside (I live in Ireland) and so off I went to have a look. Everything seemed above board, I was able to see the whole litter together with their Mother. The Mother seemed friendly and the pups were approachable, they didn't shy away. The breeder assured me that the puppies would be wormed and vaccinated etc. The only negative, was that all of the puppies seemed to have dry flaky skin. Some pups were worse than others, and the breeder told us that this was common in Yorkies...... that upon our purchase of our chosen pup, we would have to buy a suitable wash from our local vet to ease the problem. Firstly I thought "well shouldn't you do this before you sell the puppy??" but I didn't say anything. Paid a deposit for the pup we liked and will not be collecting her until she is 9 weeks old.... which is just under 3 weeks away. So between now and then, I would like to assure myself that what the breeder has told me is true. Has anybody else here experienced this with their new ball of fluff?? I intend on having her fully checked out by my own vet when I get her, but would like to avoid unnecessary problems if possible Many thanks, J xxx |

| Hmm, that breeder doesn't sound very responsible if they're not taking care of that problem. I first saw my Bailey at 7 weeks and she was healthy. When I went back to pick her up at 10 weeks the breeder said she had a little rash on her belly, but she gave me a bottle of medicated shampoo to help deal with it. It seems like you're breeder is not willing to spend any money on the puppies' well being.

| Did you actually see dry flaky skin or did you just see flakes in the coat? If the pup has not had its first bath yet, then it is possible you would see some flakes. Puppies get pee on their coats when they are young and when it dries it makes flakes. If the owner had not been brushing them yet then that might be all it is. I like to start brushing and combing mine at a young age but I don't bath them until that are a little older. Most likely your pup will be just fine if the parents looked healthy and well groomed |

| I held the pup and couldn't feel that her skin was scaly as such. The flakes did seem to be sitting in her coat only. Not sure if this is significant but the flakes were brown in colour. I had read that Yorkies have incredibly sensitive skin, and so at first I thought, oh yeah she's right, it probably is just the norm - but I really would like to satisy myself that the flakes are not an indication of something sinister. Do you think it's acceptable that I purchase the puppy and have my vet see her the day I buy her?? The breeder clearly doesn't see that the flakes are a big enough issue for her to have to do anything about them. Thanks so much. J xxx |

| If the breeder said it wasn't a big enough issue for her to do anything about then I would insist that the breeder provide you with a health guarantee.

| Did you see any sores or hair loss? DId you by chance look at the skin on the pups belly? I wonder what wash the vet prescribes for it. Maybe the weather there is different and fungal infections or something are common there? I don't know if i would be concerned or not, I guess it depends on what exactly it is. Does the breeder offer a guarentee? I have only had normal dandruff with my litters when I start brushing them and they are too small to bathe. In this instance the flakes are very small, white, and just seem to settle on their hair. If their bedding is something which the color could rub off (newspaper for one) this could certainly make the flakes darker. I hope it is just a little bit of normal puppy dander

| At times yorkies do get flakey skin. But, what is more of a concern is that you were allowed to see them at 6 weeks of age, much to young for the public to see a new litter. The first 8 weeks of their life (until their first vaccinations) should be spend with mother and with interjected care of the breeder. Pups shouldn't be bathed until after their first vaccination about between 8 and 9 weeks of age. However, there are some pups, yorkies as well as other breeds that have a condition called walking dandruff Cheyletiellosis in Dogs (Walking Dandruff Mite)

| Missy had flakes when I first brought her home. After bathing her 3-4 times they went away. However, her flakes weren't brown, they just looked like dandruff.

| Lot of info there - this forum really is the best! Well I didn't see any sores or anything like that. The flakes weren't moving so I don't think it's a dandruff mite... Rather I hope it's not!! Conditions here certainly would be different in that a rains a LOT - even in the summer - so maybe dampness?? To be fair, the breeder did suggest that I wait another couple of weeks before seeing them - she was humouring my request to see them above anything else. The pups seemed healthy otherwise so I think I'd be happy enough to take her home and have the vet look at her. I just thought, or rather hoped, that somebody on here would have seen or experienced this before. I'll keep you all posted. Due to pick her up on the 29th of this month! Thanks so much for all the help and advice so far! Very much appreciated |

| Hi all, Thanks again for all you replies. Just a quick update. I phoned the breeder today to ask how the litter was doing. She said that she had purchased some Polytar shampoo for them and says she is confident the problem will clear. So I'm a little more content with the fact that she's taking action before letting the pups go to their new homes. Have arranged to pick up my new furball a week earlier than agreed, which means I'll be getting her at 8 weeks old instead of nine. This is ok yeah?? Anyhow will post some pics upon her arrival |

| hi janee, im from dublin 22, where are you? dont mind me asking , but were the pups kept indoors or out, if out doors i know there can be a problem with lice esp if you buy on or near a farm, we bought a pom many many years ago from a farm, after a few days i noticed whitey grey flakes on his coat, took him to the vet and it was lice, but the good thing is you dont have to deflea your house and are not passed on to humans,my vet sprayed the pup with front line and i had to use a nit comb twice per day , i dont want to put you off but get your breeder checked and dont take everything they say at face value, you can pm if you like and talk
