| Newbie with several questions..I get my Yorkie this Thursday all advice appreciated! Hi everyone I've been reading these forums and getting aquainted lately with yorkie talk and getting prepared for our new baby girl Karlee, she is 13 weeks old and we are bringing her home on Thursday. I have a few questions I wanted to ask- Question #1 What is recommended to feed my Yorkie? I've read a lot of horror stories over some types of dog foods and want to feed my girl something healthy. Question #2 Also how do I prepare for the first few nights with her. I have a baby play pen and wondered would it be a good idea to put her crate, blanket, water bottle and food in the playpen and let her sleep near our bed I want to make her adjustment to our new home as easily as possible. Question #3 can you tell me some great toys for a puppy to start off with (I have a several already but just wondered some that are really good for a Yorkie and my main concern very safe) Question #4 I read about bath time to use warm towels or blow dry your Yorkie and also wondered I want to keep my Yorkie with shorter hair would it be best to trim her each week before bath time? Any advice for me would be appreciated even if its a question I did'nt ask I just want some ideas for her first week home with us to get her adjusted. Thanks!!! |

| I wouldn't have thought you need to trim weekly, If you want to keep her hair short just trim as and when needed. |

| Welcome to YT You have great questions and I can try to help you with a few. We have a ton of information in the different forums you can browse through too. 1. Food is always a tricky question since there isn't a right answer for everyone. I personally feel Wellness to my 2 and that's because it works for my little guy with a super sensitive tummy. 2. Are you planning on crate training her? If so I would start her out in that right away. Sounds like you are all set with the blankets 3. Chew toys! Lots of them I still remember those razor sharp puppy teeth~ 4. I keep mine short too and only bathe them about every 2 weeks (more if they are rolling around in gross stuff, which happens). I don't blow dry because they hate it but if you start her out early getting used to it I bet it will be a breeze. Good Luck to you and your new baby~ |

On the Wellness puppy food do you buy online or at a Petstore? I'm going today to Petco to see what they have. Yes I do want to start out crate training her, should I put a puppy pad in her crate at night time? Or would it be okay to put her in a playpen at night with a puppy pad out and I will have her crate in the playpen with some water, toys and a blanket...only thing that concerns me is if she tried to chew on the puppy pad I am scared it will hurt her if swallowed some of the padding...as you can tell I'm very nervous I just want to keep her safe but want to make the transition to our home easy as possible. Thanks and I look forward to your replies and I am loving reading these forums so many topics have already came up and I'm learning a lot already!

| You are going to be a great mom!!! I've only had 1 puppy and that was my Simon. I got Hallie when she was 2 1/2 so I'm not the most experienced puppy person I switched to Wellness after trying many different foods because Simon had such a sensitive stomach but I've had great luck with it. I get it here at a local pet store but I think they sell it at PetCo now too. It's a kibble but they also make canned too. I sometimes give the canned food as a little treat. I pad trained Simon when he was a puppy and actually put him on the pad A LOT until he did his business and then praised him ridiculously. He is still pad trained today And to be honest, I didn't get much sleep the first week with him. I stared at him all the time b/c I was paranoid. Mine aren't crate trained so I don't really know what to tell you about that but I do know that a lot of yorkies here are so I bet someone will be able to give you lots of advice about that. |

My furkids Donating Member | Welcome to YT and CONGRATS on your new furbaby!! As SimondHallie said I would start her out in a crate...I used to keep mine in a baby playpen during the day if I was working around the house or had to step out. I would put toys, food, water and a pee pad in it for them. I would crate them at bedtime. Sadie (4yrs old now) never had a problem with the crate...she went in it from day one and I never heard a peep from her...Lillie, on the other hand (3yrs old now) has always been a whiner! She is a baby!! She cried for 5 nights in a row!!!! I was up several times during the night it was just like having a new born baby!!! Now...,thanks to hubby!!, they both sleep with us. Depending on the pet store. I'm not sure if Petsmart, or Petco sells this. You may have to go to a specialty pet store to find Wellness. Here in Mass you can buy it at Agway...not sure if you have any of those where you live!...Wellness is a very good food made right here in Massachusetts. I feed Merricks Grammies pot pie...they do sell a puppy palate too..you want to make sure that you feed puppy food. Good Luck and make sure you post plenty of pics!! Brenda

| Congratz on your new baby!!! I am also a first time Yorkie mom. My little guy is 5 months old now. This is what I have done with him... 1: Natural Balance-Small Bites for small breed dogs. He loves it. I get it at Petco for about $15. a bag. They are pretty good at giving you coupons at checkout for your next visit. 2: Treats- I use Little Jacs by Bil Jacs (purple bag with a yorkie on the front) He will do anything for one. They are great for house breaking. 3: Toys- Bully sticks for teething (I always supervise him with them) he loves them and they help his sore gums. Rope toys are also fun and good for teething. He also likes balls and squeeke (spelling sorry) toys. 4: I use a crate. He will go in it on his own now and play and rest. I keep it on the floor next to my side of the bed. He usually sleeps all night but sometimes needs to pee in the early morning. I keep his pee pad in the bathroom and he is much better with it. I keep a blanket and a safe toy in his crate with him. I did alot of research also before we brought him home. I found out that all yorkies are very different and you will figure out what works for you and your baby. Good Luck and I hope this helps.

So Natural Balance and Wellness seems to be the two brands I'm seeing the most of I will definatley go today and probaly buy both kinds since I live an hour away that way see which one works for Karlee to keep from having to go back incase one or the other don't work. Next question what do bully sticks look like? I saw a thread about these the other day are they the long rawhide looking sticks with several per pack? I have a rope toy that is suppose to help with good breath it says its spearmint flavored after reading a little more about Yorkie's would this be okay to give her since its flavored? Again THANK all of you for the responses you all are really helping a newbie out here! Cathy

| Best wishes for the best puppy in the world. I am a breeder, so I know a little something about these wee loves. First of all, do not suddenly change the food, their tummies are very senitive. YOu will have to find out from the breeder what food they are on, then mix it carefully and slowly with the food you decide to use. I usually send some food home for this change. Please do not put the pup in bed with you. Yes at night put the puppy in the crate, close the door, this will help train them that is where they sleep until they are old enough to be out. I have three of my 7 that are crate trained, and I love it because if I have to take them someplace I can always take a crate and they are find with it. Also in a car, please do not let them ride on your lap. Them become a missle if anything happens and have no protection from the car. Other then giving them good vet treatment and lots of love you will find the puppy being the joy of your life. Bless you and your new baby, I am sure all will be fine. |

| You are asking great questions and getting a lot of good advice! Since there was a question about her getting used to the blow dryer, I just want to say that I started using it on low with Ginger from the very first time I bathed her, and that blow drying time has become one of our favorite bonding times. I have been able to use it on my rescue boy, Bernie too, although I've begun keeping his hair super short so its not necessary. If you are going to Petco, I believe they sell a couple of brands of bully sticks. Some smell worse than others, I can never remember which is which, but my nose knows. Just watch closely with these or any chew toys as pieces can come loose and become lodged in their throats. I even had a red kong do that once with Ginger. Just because these babies are little, don't imagine for a second they don't have strong jaws. The rule in my house, if they have a chew toy they are in the same room as I am. If I can't be there I put it up. I would also put together a little first aid kit. There is a sticky here with a lot of good info. Some of the items in that kit have saved us in the past. Also, post the numbers to your vet an poison control I hope you never need them, but you don't want to waste precious time searching for them if you ever do. I actually have my vets # programmed into my phone. LOL, no I don't call very often, but in an emergency, its there. Welcome and good luck and I can't wait to see pictures and hear about your pups antics.
