| Raincoats and Winter Coats Hey everyone! I had a quick question or two. My dad made a comment about how dogs should not be put in sweaters and coats because it takes away their ability to adapt to the environment and grow a winter coat. I tried to explain how yorkies don't grow an undercoat, and that i thought maybe they were just bred that way, for showing and leisure or something like that. He wanted to argue so i let it drop, but i wanted to ask for sure, they can't adapt to the outside like other dogs can they? I've read about hypothermia and overheating. It says they have hair like humans do which doesn't provide warmth. I'm doing the winter coat and rain coat thing anyways, cause the books say she'll need it, but i had to have that backup from you YTers!! Also: Does anyone know a good place to get cute winter coats and raincoats for my pup? |

| That is right they have hair not fur so they need coats and sweaters in the winter. They are ok outside for a little while in the winter or in the heat but a yorkie could never be an outside dog

| Personally, I don't think yorkies can adjust to temperature extremes like other breeds because of their size as well as their coats. If you intend to take your little girl out for walks or when you run errands, visit friends, etc. she will probably need something to help keep her cozy outside. Usually, they are fine with indoor temps but this depends on the dog - some are just colder natured than others and like to have clothing on most of the time.

| As you already know, they have fine hair and not a thick fur coat. Alfie has a sheepskin lined coat for winter walks and a blue thin nylon coat for the rainy weather when we go hunting in the woods. In the winter I don't keep him out for more than half an hour as his belly and legs and paws will get too cold, they will lose their body temperature very quick in winter without a coat on |

| any dog with an undercoat (dogs that shed) will adapt to cold and warm weather. our yorkies do not have an undercoat- hence they do not shed. This prevents them from being able to deal with very hot or very cold weather. They NEED winter coats and or sweaters. | I know that Yorkies do not have fur they have hair. But Bella does shed. It is very strange but if I hold her sometimes i will have her black hair all over me. It doesnt bother me at all, I was just wondering if I need to use a different product on her hair or something since this is not supposed to be happening??? Thanks!

| you know i don't think when they say a yorkie doesn't shed that they mean no hair will come off them, i think it just means that they don't dander or have shedding seasons like other dogs...but i could be wrong. |

| Yorkies have hair not fur, so they do need to keep warm when it is cold- coats are not only cute but necessary. I buy a lot of mine online through many sites and then throughout many stores. Walmart carries many coats when it starts getting cold and they are very reasonable. Good luck- we dont use raincoats but definitely sweaters and coats. If you need a sweatshirt they need one.

| My two loose hair just like I do- very little but you will see a little here and there. They do grow out the puppy hair into adult hair and mine both lost theirs around 5 months.

The 3 Musketeers Donating Member | My Misty has both a sweater and a winter jacket that she wears during the fall, spring, and winter. She does seem to get cold faster that my Cocker Spaniel but she wants to stay outside as long as Mazie. I haven't decided what to do for my Maltese yet, but she doesn't go outside yet.

| You're right, Yorkies do not have an undercoat. However, Jackson has never once wore a shirt, coat or any clothing. He does fine even in a foot of snow. He loved every minute of it. He's also 14lbs so that may affect his body temperature.

| Yorkies could not adapt to the outside at least not here in upstate NY. I can barely get Zoe to go out in the snow and you can tell my the way she is shivering and shaking even with a coat on that she couldn't be outside long! |

| My girl would wear a sweater in the Winter and if it was really cold I'd put a baby onsie on her and then her sweater. She was pee pad trained so rainy days or extremely cold days we didn't go outside. There was time where a week would go by and she was inside, she didn't mind! Once the weather got nice though we were out all the time going for walks and I never dressed her in the warmer weather. |
