| Question about Breeding I just purchased a female yorkie that is 8 weeks old and still has short hair, she is purbreed and came from a very good breeder but i was told that the father of this pup carried a short hair ressecive gen and by the time my girl is 6 months she will have a normal long hair yorkie coat. My question is that if I would brred this pup will her puppys have the short hair also? |

| If you have an inclination to breed your baby please spend lots of time educating yourself. To start out need to make sure that your baby doesn't have any of the genetic diseases that plague the Yorkie breed. We have so many sick Yorkie furbabies here on YT. Because of careless breeding there is a tremendous problem with off-standard Yorkies. It is very sad. Just take time to figure things out and you will make a wise decision for your baby.

Way too young to think about breeding her anyway. Enjoy her and let her be a pup. Do a lot of studying. If you're concerned I'd check on the past offspring of the sire....see what he's produced so far.

| A bit of unsolicited advice. One never purchases a dog for breeding or show until approximately 7 - 10 months of age. That way you know what you're getting and if they are of breeding quality.

| On a side note, any breeder who would knowingly breed a dog that did not possess the correct coat AND who would release there pups so young is not what someone who would be considered a "good breeder." Just IMO. As Mardelin stated, at this point many people select their breeding stock once the dog is a bit older, that way they have a better general idea of what qualities the dog will possess as an adult. I would suggest that if you feel you may be interested in breeding your little one in the future, you find yoruself a good mentor and educated yourself on the breeding process and canine genetics while you are waiting for your little girl to grow up. |

| Thank you I want to thank you all for your input, but no one really answered my question. I'm not even sure if I am going to breed it's just a thought at this point and if she did turn out to be breeding quality. I would most deffinately educate myself further in this breed and thats why I'm asking the question I did. My girl right now has a min pin coat not the fluffy puppy coat that you see most yorkie pups have. It is starting to grow out a little and I know she will have a regular yorkie coat when she matures. I want to know because her father has a reccesive short hair gean will she carry that on to her pups?? |

Sounds like your breeder did not know what she was doing or could care less since she breed knowing that the male did not have correct quality of hair based on what you said. Also you bought the pup at 8 weeks - way too young to purchase a yorkie pup, especially if you are thinking of breeding. And if the breeder gave you full registration on an 8 week old pup - another reason not to breed her. Your breeder sounds like she was just breeding pups. I do not know your breeder, only from what you stated, but seems like she was not trying to breed good quality and I do not think you want to pass what she could produce on. It is best that if you are going to breed to get the best quality you can. Please do not take this wrong and do not mean to be harsh, but you asked and with breeding it is very serious and one must be responsible for what they produce. so you can most likely expect anything to come from breeding her. i would say spay her and just love her for whatever she is.

| Sounds like a rough terrier coat to me. It is hard to tell exactly what she has since we do not have photos and only going by what you are telling us. But since you said the father does not have a good coat either - short hair, and your pup's hair is shorter than normal - then chances are she could have short hair as an adult. Even if she does grow a nice coat - she could pass on this gene to her pups. I do not think any ethical breeder would want to do this. Take a look at the yorkie standard and see that there is a lot weighing in on their coat quality. Here are some photos of some of my past pups and you can compare their coats to your girl, I think most of them are about 8 weeks old. Chantal - you and I must have been posting at the same time and had the same idea. LOL Last edited by topknot; 08-01-2009 at 05:21 AM. |
