| Big yorkie not a yorkie at all?? Im curious, because i read up alot about the breed and i keep coming by a phrase that says a full grown yorkie should be 7 pounds... but my boy "yorkie" is only 5 months and at 6 ponds already. the vet says he might be almost 15 at full maturity. my question is: if my dog is so big compared to the standard, does that mean he must be mixed.. i do have papers, but how can i be sure theyre correct? i have some pictures of him on here - feel free to look. he looks like a yorkie, but can they get that big? |

| There are lots of yorkies on here that are larger than standard. My two are 14 lbs and 17 lbs. Yes, that's huge, but not unheard of.

| The standard for the breed is up to 7 lbs. that does not mean that they cant get bigger! LOL The breed varies so much! Some are larger and some are teeny. Ryder is my boy 9 months (and by no means standard), he is about 8 lbs and I am sure still growing. Your boy might just be a bigger boy, nothing too worry about! Congrats, I am off to look at your pics!

| I have a yorkie that is 14-15 lbs. Also, just wanted to say that a lot of dogs stop growing around 6 months, so your baby should start slowing down soon.

| It's not a dumb question! A lot of people wonder! Just remember, that even if your baby does grow up to be a "teapot", there will just be more to love on!

| honestly i hate to say it but i baught him from a store.. this place puppypetite.com check it out and lemme know what you think? he is a healthy dog, you get to see the facilitys and they have guarantees, but i think people might shun be for buying him there.. but with all the "rules" and "regulations" you have to obey to get one from a breeder i just took the easy route. and theyre not horribly priced either. so needless to say, no i didnt see his parents. |

Every breed has a standard or "blueprint" reputable breeders carefully follow to produce puppies who will grow up to look like Yorkies are supposed to look. Beautiful Yorkies are no accident, but are an example of a thorough knowledge of genetics and a commitment to the breed by reputable breeders. That's why they have so many "rules and regulations" as you call them. It is to protect any puppies they produce and the integrity of the breed. Due to their popularity, Yorkies are a favorite among puppy mills and backyard breeders and the result is Yorkies with all kinds of genetic health problems who look more like mixed breeds. What registry are his papers from? Many of the puppy mills use "alternative" registries besides the AKC. If your boy came with papers from one of these registries, there isn't any way to know if he is purebred or not. No one will shun you because you bought him from a pet store. Unfortunately, many people make the same mistake when they get their first puppy. | |
