YT Addict | Potty Training and Belly Bands Harley is both pee pad and outdoor trained (or almost was). I am wanting to get rid of the pee pads. For some reason he was doing really good on them and hasn't used them in probably 2 weeks. He goes each time I take him outside but he seems to be having a good many accidents inside too. Since he hasn't been using the pee pads I would like to go ahead and do away with them (really don't like them laying around anyway). I would rather him be strictly outdoor. Has anyone used the belly band as a means of potty training? I know it is used for marking but can it be used for potty training as well? I am steam cleaning carpets again this weekend. The potty training is driving me crazy. |

| Belly bands are not used for potty training. In fact, they make potty training harder. How old is he now? Could he be marking? |

YT Addict | He just turned 10 months old. He made some progress on potty training and then went back to peeing inside. We live in a brand new house and he is ruining my carpets. I've read about the bell training on here so I may try that. |

| They get used to going in the pads instead of holding it and peeing where they are supposed to. It's sort of like potty training children. You have to get them out of diapers and into training pants so they learn control. You have get him to potty where he is supposed to and praise and reward him. Don't allow him to go in inappropriate places. Keep him confined when you are not home and leashed to you when you are. Set him up for success. Don't give up and admit failure by resorting to belly bands in a puppy his age. Is he neutered? You didn't answer that question. If he isn't he is probably marking. |

| Belly bands are generally used with males who mark in the house. They are used as a last resort when the habit can't be broken. They don't correct the behavior, just prevent males from ruining the furniture. They put a band aid on a problem - literally. |

| Ladymom, do you have suggestions for breaking the marking habit? if so please do shoot them my way. Gucci has started doing this and I do not want to resort to belly bands he's only been doing it for about 2 weeks maybe 3. I do not want him neutered, he has been health tested so far and seems to be a good breeding candidate at this time and I really want to breed him once to keep a baby from him in the future, however, I WANT THIS ISSUE FIXED. Original Poster - I agree if he is marking the behavior needs to be broken but unfortunately I am in the same boat as you and cannot hand out suggestions besides catching him in the act and FIRMLY telling him NO! and moving him where he needs to be, Sometimes this works with my baby and he marks on the pad instead so maybe I am doing something right. HOWEVER, I feel I do need more help and it will take more work. Hope it works out for you. |

I hate to tell you, but it will probably get worse as he gets older, especially if he is used as a stud. Being bred can trigger all sorts of objectionable sexual related behaviors. These personality changes should be factored into any decision to breed. A neutered dog makes a much better pet. | |
