| homemade yogurt? Anyone else? I have been making yogurt at home for about 5 years or so now It's really yummy and EASY....plus with all of the health benefits for tooth and gum disease, I think ALL yorkies and humans should be eating it daily It costs me about $1.00 for a QUART of homemade greek style yogurt or I can pay $6.00 for 16 ounces in the store It can take as little as 4 hours in the "incubator" up to about 36 hours for a more SOUR yogurt. I tend to do longer time for a couple of reasons.1) A TRUE YOGURT (hard to come by) is incubated for at least 24 hours 2) I LIKE the more tart flavor 3) I tend to use mine in place of sour cream or mayo in lots of recipes Anyone else make yogurt or interested in giving it a go? |

| I would love to know how to make it. I eat the Activia Vanilla Yogurt every morning. I take four tablespoons of the yogurt and add a cup of ice water to it, shake it and pour it over my cereal. Yummy. |

| There is a lot of different methods to accomplish the same thing (great yogurt) I have a Salton yogurt incubator ($20) that I fill with ultra pasteurized milk, 2T of Greek yogurt(after the 1st batch you can use your own yogurt for this step) and a bit of powdered milk for thickness and extra calcium. Put all in the incubator and plug in! Leave for 4 - 36 hours depending on the level of health benefits and tartness you desire! I make a batch every 3rd day for our needs. Add jam or berries before serving if you want a flavored version. |

| I haven't made the homemade yogurt but I do make my own Kefir which I give to the dogs on occassion and the rest I use for smoothies. For those of you who have never heard of kefir it is similar to yogurt ,has about 10 different probiotic cultures in it and tastes very similar to yogurt. You start with a starter packet of culture put it into a quart of whole milk ( you can use 2% ) and let it sit on the counter at room temp. for 24 hours or longer if you want it really thick. The culture is separated and then put into the next quart of milk and keeps going. If I want to take a break from the kefir for a while I just put the clump of culture in a freezer bag and freeze it. Yorkies are prone to stomach issues as well as tooth and gum disease. The properties of yogurt have been proven to help with both of those issues. I eas yogurt myself for healthy gum tissue | |
