| Yorkie passed last night My wife and I got back from the vet about two hours ago. Our 19 month old female Yorkie (Ginger) suddenly died around 3:30 am. We also have her brother from the same litter. They always loved playing together. We are racking our brains trying to figure out what happened. She was eating, running, playing up to about 5:00 PM; then she started these soft bowel movements, but not quite true diarrreah (spelling ?) I noticed that there was some green lawn grass in bowel movement. She would not eat or drink any water. She can be a little aloof at times, so my wife and I did not think anything of it when she hopped down off the bed to sleep on the floor just before we went to bed at 10:00PM. For some reason I awoke at 2:00am to this terrrible smell. My wife got of bed also and immediately noticed Ginger splayed out on the rug with labored breathing and very, very lethargic. I tried to revive her, but she barely responed to anything I did. There were a few more spots of soft bowels around the bedroom, but no true diarehea. We rushed her to the vet. They attempted an IV, but it was just too late. What could it have been ? The other Yorkie is fine. They always ate the same foods. We can't find any evidence of poisoning,snake/insect bites, bad food, etc..etc... She was as healthy as a horse and weighed 8 pounds. We did take them to the Georgia beach the day before to romp on the sand and run thru the swallow water, but they have done this activity quite frequently over the last year. Any ideas ?? |

| I am so sorry for the loss of Ginger. It must be devastating. You said you noticed green grass in her bowel movements...any chance there were any chemicals on the grass that might have been toxic to her? |

| I don't have a clue what it could be, but I am so sorry for your loss. Did your vet not give you any ideas what it could have been?

| My deepest sympathies. I am deeply sorry your baby passed so unexpectedly and so young. What a tragedy. I wishI had more suggestions for you but if it were me I think I would take her brother to the vet first thing this morning to get checked out too. Just in case it was contagious or if he ingested the same thing she did etc. You will be in our prayers and this incredibly difficult time. Give her brother lots of hugs and kisses. I feel so sad for him too. |

Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | I am so sorry for the loss of your little Ginger. These sudden unexplained deaths are harder to cope with, I think. I don't have any ideas for the cause that you have not already thought of. My first thought was poisoning from something she got into in the yard or beach. But you ruled that out???? Did the vet give you any ideas? Do any tests? Are you going to have them do any? It might be helpful to know in case it is a hereditary thing since your other yorkie is a sibling. Again, I am so sorry. Though I have not personally felt the pain you are going through I do understand it and don't look forward to the day when any of my babies pass over to Rainbow Bridge. Prayers & hugs to your family.

| I am so sorry about little Ginger. It is so hard losing one. Like someone said I would really try to get to the bottom of what happened through testing since you have her little brother. Better safe than sorry. So many things in our yards can be toxic. I don't even try to have flowers or anything anymore in the back. I have had one get deathly sick from just drinking water from a flower pot. Hope its nothing genatic. Again I am so sorry. RIP little angel!!!! |

| First off I am so sorry this has happened to you. Second perhaps something in the yard she ate ...wild mushrooms are highly toxic to dogs.

| I'm so sorry for your loss I would take the litter mate to the vet just to make sure everything is ok with him.

| I am sorry for your loss. My neighbor lost a JRT puppy the same way only there was blood in the bowel movements. It happened suddenly. They went to bed with a healthy puppy, got up to a dead one with poop everywhere. The vet said it was hookworms altho no one had seen any. |

| All: Thanks fory your prayers and suggestions. We live in South Carolina with a fenced in yard. No mushrooms. I did put down some lawn ferilizer last week, but we have had at least two heavy, heavy, down pours of rain since then. I forgot to mention that the vet said she had a little blood coming out of her mouth when he examined her, but I never saw any on the rugs, or on her fur. How does a healthy, muscular Yorkie going from being the life of the party to being dead within a few hours ? I can't figure it out. There was no prolonged period of decline in this case; rather sudden. |
