| If You're a Yorkie Lover or Expert Read This We are having a live-in pet sitter take care of our Bella for 12 days in August. She will have to be crated 10 hours during the work day. I can't stand the idea of her being crated longer than 2-3 hours. Any suggestions or advice about this would be appreciated. I am really anxious about it. Thanks for your help! |

| If the sitter is going to be gone for extended periods of time like that, is there a way that Bella could stay in an area of the house that's gated off rather than being crated? Miles stays in my bathroom during the day. It's safe for him in there (no wires to chew on, nothing he can get into), plus it's big enough that he can have his bed, food, water, and plenty of room to run around in. He's much, much, MUCH happier staying in there than being crated! |

| A Little More Information We've searched for an inhome sitter. It is almost impossible to find. Most sitters come twice a day for 30 minutes. So, we found someone willing to spend the night and any time she is not working at her job. We always crate Bella when she is alone. So, I am just struggling with the length of time. I'd like to know how you found someone willing to spend 24/7 in your home? Did you go through an agency or something else? I've looked and looked. We don't want to board her. Please let me know how you found someone. Thanks! |

| Thanks! MilesDavis Thanks for your kind reply. So many people have told us she is more secure and safer in her crate. I'm just so confused. I'm not sure what is best. Thanks for taking the itme to reply. I appreciate your kind support. |

Do you have an x-pen. If so, that would be a better option. Place a small crate or tent in the x-pen. Pee Pads, water, food and toys..... I'd opt for adding a top to it, just in case she's a climber.

| When I am going to be gone for more than 3-4 hours, I put my Yorkie in the bathroom. I leave a light on and put his bed, chew toys, pad, food and water in there. I make sure the toilet lid is closed, tissue put up, etc. so the room is very safe for him. I think he sleeps most of the time when we are gone. He rarely uses his pad or eats, but they are there if he needs them. |

| 10 hours in a crate is waaayy too looonngg. You should try an xpen or block off more of an area for your lil one. (bathroom, laundry room, kitchen, etc.)

YT 1000 Club Member | How old is your little one? I agree that 10 hours is way too long in a crate. I also agree it would be better to set up an area for her to be able to eat, drink, play, potty and sleep. I wish I was closer I'd love to help you out.

| Have one of neighbor kids maybe come over and let her out several times is one suggestion..... Another one have you tried contacting vets in area or your vet? They may know someone, or maybe someone that pet sits, I got lucky my vet tech was on vacation when I went out of town she wasn't busy and she came and furbaby set. Or have you looked into having sitter drop baby off at doggy daycare?

| I have to agree. 10 hours is too long in a crate. I do just that. Have a neighbor or family member come over and play and feed them. I usually block them off in the kitchen area as the doggy door is off the laundry room ( which is part of the kitchen) I have only gone away twice for a few days, but that seems to work. They have their toys, and beds, and mine are spoiled. I leave the tv on for them.

Senior Yorkie Talker | There are so many great new kennels out there now. Isn't there something in your area? My dogs love going to the kennel when we travel and can't take them. I researched long and hard and once I found this one I knew it was a hit when they are excited to go there. The have play groups and get lots of exercise and playtime. If you are going to be gone for longer than 5 days, I think a kennel is much better for the pup - if you can't get a live in sitter that is with them throughout the day. I know it's hard. Good luck.

Senior Yorkie Talker | I just did a little research into kennels in your area and here are a few that have good reviews. | I can understand if the petsitter also has a day job. I petsit as well as my day job of grooming. I would suggest they find another sitter than can help out with an afternoon visit for some play and potty time. I'm lucky enough that majority of my clients live very close to my work so I take my lunch with me to check on furbabies. The only other thing if you can't find a 2nd helper would be to board them at a kennel. I know most people don't like doing that though You may try calling local vets, they probably know of someone who will do an afternoon visit. Good luck!
