| HELP..how to stop food hording? IDEAS? my yorkie gets fed 2x per day. When food is left out he eats everything even if full. Aany ideas how to stop this? If I were to leave food out do you think over time he would adjust realizing he has access at all times? He was a rescue so maybe he thought the food would run out. |

| Yes that sounds right he is probably thinking he won't get anymore so he gobbles it up quickly. Maybe try hand feeding a little at a time so he won't gobble it up. I'm sure someone here has a great idea that could help you. Good luck.

I wouldn't leave food out at all. I would feed him 2x daily. Let him know your in charge of the food. It's important to keep a schedule. If he's feed twice a day, he shouldn't be full when eating only hungary. When giving him treats make him sit for them as well as sitting before being fed. Once he knows and trusts you he will rely on you for food and know he won't be going hungary. I think you need to build up trust between the two of you and this is a way to do it. It may take some time but he'll understand in time. If there is no food around there is nothing to hord. Good luck, | |

| Annie B was a rescue and never did overcome the 'fear' of being without food. She would have eaten until she died, if allowed. I never could find a way to get her to understand she would always have food with me. I would feed her a breakfast, a light snack when I came home from work and then a dinner a little later in the evening. Boo is a rescue and he does just fine with free feeding. I don't know if there is a way to get the hoarders to understand, I just had to learn how to work my schedule for Annie.

| That was kind of my gut feeling that he just will not over come this very eaisly if ever. I don't know his history so it it really hard to say why he does this. He has made some improvements but not to where he can be free fed. Thanks |

YT 1000 Club Member | The vet says some dogs live to eat and others eat to live. I free feed Roxie, she only eats a few pieces at a time. It wouldn't really matter if I tried to feed her x amount of times per day because whatever I put out in the morning would still be there for the 2nd feeding. My grand dogs are the same way and they are big dogs. We put food in the bowl and they eat what they want and come back later to graze on the rest. I really think it depends on the dog and if you have had them since puppy or whatever situation you get them from.
