| Make sure she is used to the carrier you will be using. Have ID tags on your baby at all times in the airport and during the flight. Make sure you have a leash with you as well. Many airports will not allow you to have them on a leash walking in them, so make sure you know if this is allowed. Pack a blanket in the carrier in case the floor boards are cold. Bring disposable potty pads with you - you can use them in the airport bathroom floor before boarding and you can also use them in the airplane bathroom floor during the flight if necessary. Once you take off, you may be able to put the carrier on your lap. If you have a really nice flight attendant, they may let you open the carrier, but many do not and that is what the rules say. The carrier will need to be under the seat in front of you for take-off and landing both. Many times the motion of the flight will lull them to sleep, especially if the flight isn't terribly long. Good luck!!!!!

Don't feed 3 hours before your flight. Oh! Since you're going to Florida, the land of mosquitoes, if you don't already have the vet put your dog on heartworm meds.

Senior Yorkie Talker | I lived bi-coastal for 4 years (NJ and CA) and took my Silky with me every 6 weeks. I would recommend that you put the carrier our a few days before you go and let the pup get used to it. Put treats in it. Leave it open so they can go in and out, but then try zipping up and leaving them in for a few minutes at a time. My pup loved it so much that as soon as I pulled it out he would jump in it and wait. I also would bring extra treats to give to him during the flight and would get ice chips from the attendants. Good luck. Oh, P.S. when you are going through security, you remove the dog from the carrier - take off his collar and leash - and hand carry him throught the screening. His carrier will go through the x-ray machine. The TSA people told me that more than one person has put the carrier through with the dog in it!!

| when I fly with my baby, I stop feeding and drinking a few hours before I leave for the airport. I also take her for a nice walk to tire her out before we leave. Once we get to the gate I give her a drink. This keeps her from having a full bladder as my dog won't use wee wee pads.I wait for last call when boarding the plane due to the fact that in the gate area they can be out of their carrier. or in it with it unzipped/open. but once on the plane they have to go right under the seat in front of you so I prefer to be last one on the plane for that reason. NYC to FL isn't going to be a very long flight so I am sure your dog will be fine. The humm of the plane puts my girls to sleep. As long as they can see, hear and smell me they are fine. I've had people sitting right next to me on arrival say I didn't even know you had a dog in there. As soon as we land I pull the carrier to my lap and unzip the top so I can pet and talk to her. What are they going to say to me? we have arrived.. My maltese has flown about 7 or 8 times and my yorkie once. (I've only had my yorkie a few months). If she's prone to motion sickness. your vet can tell you how much drammamine you can give your baby or benedryl. I've tried both. luckily neither made my dog hyper. But I don't give them anything now. I think I did it as a precaution but they don't need it now they are such good little travelers. They are happy just being with me. Thats how your baby will be too. If you're calm, they're calm. If you're nervous they feel that energy and get nervous too. Happy trails and enjoy traveling with your baby! its the only way to go!!! |

| I have flown with my yorkie quite a few times and I do agree with all the advice that has been listed. I would like to add that your baby's temperment will also determine their behavior on the flight. If (s)he's a barker then I think you should bring something they can chew on for a while to keep them occupied. Also if you can take them on a long walk before the flight to make sure they're tired it would help them to sleep more. My mom has a yokie and usually on the way back home my baby sleeps becasuse he's so tired from playing with his buddy for 3 to 4 days but on the way there, he's usually a lot more restless. As others have said, some flight attendants are very strict about even holding their bag in your lap so you want to make sure you are able to console them without being able to pick them up. |
