YT 500 Club Member | How do you feel about the cross breeds? So my friend is allergic to her shorkie. (shih tzu/yorkie) And she said she wanted me to take her in for her because of her allergies. She tried to see if her brother wanted him, but her brother's allergies are worse. I was just wondering if you guys have any of the cross breeds? Do they have alot of health problems? Thanks in advance.

| It's really your discission. Do you know / like this dog? Do you have a "perfect" dog in mind and this one isn't it? YTers love all dogs and all mixes. So don't feel we wouldn't talk to you or something like that. Tons of us on here have other dogs besides yorkies!!! My Barley (Yorkie) is a rescue who came from a shelter, so I have no idea if he's a pure breed yorkie or not. So please look into your own heart and ask yourself if this is the right dog for you. Please, let us know what you decide. If you don't take it, maybe you can foster it and see if someone on here would like to adopt it. Best Wishes!!!

| As far as health problems, you really don't know. If parents were healthy and without gentic problems all should be fine.

| I have a Yorkie/Maltese and I love her. I think mutts make the best pets. The cross in my oppinion makes for a calmer dog. I do not think they have any more health issues then a full breed and in a lot of instances less health issues. I think you would be fine. With that said; I also have to state that I do not condone purposely breeding for these so called designer dogs. In my oppinion there are too many "Mutts" in shelters and rescues that need homes. I don't like the word mutt I prefer mixed pup but the truth of the matter is that years back before all the greed came into play that is all these dogs were, now they give them a fancy name and charge a fortune. Sorry to get off course. I think your friend's mix would make a wonderful pet if you are looking for another. Elaine Last edited by jrsygal37; 06-27-2009 at 07:06 PM. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | While I don't think people should breed for them because they are too many pets available, and you cannot predict the results when you are mixing breeds, I do think they can make great pets. I happen to love both the Shih Tzu, and the Yorkie, and think a cross would be a fine dog. Concerning health, every dog born gets half its genes from one parent and the other half from the other parent, so it really depends on whether the parents were healthy, not if their genes were Yorkie or Shih Tzu. Best of luck!

| Thank you. I think shes pretty too. I remember when they asked If I would take her in and I said No 100 times. not because she was a mix but because I had just lost minnie not long before that. ( didn't know she was going to make everyone feel better) some say she looks more like Yorkie in the face and some say she looks more like Shih Tzu. I see both in her. one day ill see more Yorkie and somedays Ill see more Shih Tzu. lol |

| This is how it is with Tia too. When I first saw her I thought she looked all Maltese then as I looked down at her face all I could see was Yorkie. Some days I see more Maltese and some days I see more Yorkie. I call her a champagne Yorkie. LOL. I'm on a different computer or I'd post pictures. By the way I'm glad you found someone to heal your broken heart. I know how that is. We lost two in one year. Elaine |
