| mats I know mats are bad, but is it vital to get them out as soon as possible? Scruffs has developed massive mats on his sholder blades. I dont have a brush for him, any tips on what I should do? I was going to take him to the groomers, but she said he would most likely have to be shaved or have his hair super super short ( he still has his black baby hair and I dont want it gone!!). I have looked at dematting brushes, and the are all so expensive. |

Senior Yorkie Talker | You really must get him a brush and do it daily, otherwise you will have to keep him super short. There is a gal on here that sells a brush that is not that expensive. Think it's called a Madan. I am not sure it is as good as the wooden pin brush, but it is half the price. You can type it into the search.

| To get the mats already in the fur out try bathing him and soaking the mats in conditioner ( even people if you don't have puppy conditioner) and combing them while still wet with the conditioner on it then rinse them thoroughly. After you get the mats out if nothing else at least use a comb every day. I groom mine at least 2 times a day. Morning and night.

| be extra careful when you bath a dog with matts though as they tighten up when they get wet and can be very painful. When Molly first had them, i cut her hair short with scissors and have had to keep it short ever since. |

| AH! Another Scruffs!! He looks similar too, with the skinny ears. My dog had the black and then he turned bright bright silver, and now he is a mix of dark silver/black/a bit of light silver. His really light tan turned into a darker gold color. It's not too bad to be silver . You get used to it! Maybe it'll keep changing like my Scruffs. Love the name .

| Go to Petsmart and get one of the bamboo combs with rotating pins, they work out the mats without ripping too much hair out. My boss raises yorkies and this is what we use when grooming them--brushes don't work very well to get the under coat, IMO-they miss the small mats which turn into big, nasty mats in a few days. I also use detangling spray for kids/or leave in conditioner spray, also start at the back end and work your way front--that way you aren't combing the mats in harder. I will generally hold a hand full of hair and pull a few strands out at a time, that way you are working out mats a little at a time. Good luck--work with your baby and they will tolerate grooming well. My girls see me pull out there grooming bag and run,lol-they lay nicely to comb when I get them--but you can tell they aren't happy, heee, heee. |
