| Was I to harsh? A co-worker just found out that I had adopted Jordy from a rescue group last November. I told her that he had come from a puppy mill and wasn't in the best condition when he was rescued. She had two things to say: 1) How old was he? - When I answered that he's now 2 years old, she said 2) "That's good you didn't have to potty train him." WTH?!?! My jaw dropped onto my desk!!! Anyway, our conversation was by e-mail so I'm posting my reply below. My question is: was I too harsh or abrupt with her? I do have to work with her after all. My response: "Um, well, he was raised in a puppy mill. That means he was kept in a cage 24/7, never saw daylight, never got to play, never touched grass, never felt the human touch, never received affection, never bathed, never groomed and he had to live in his own filth because there was no where for him to go in that tiny cage. He was bigger than the 2 pounders the puppy millers want to use for studs, so he was ignored and starved. When the rescue got him he was filthy, matted, with sores and ear infections - I could go on and on about Jordy alone. When I got him he had no idea how to play, he didn't have a clue what to do with a toy or a treat, and he didn't know what to think when I patted or hugged him. Thank God he wasn't the only one rescued that day. So, yes, we are still working on potty training him. But now, he plays like a puppy, loves his toys and treats, and lets me know when he's ready for huggins and kissins (he loves to sit on my lap). He also tolerates grooming time much better than the others! He has the SWEETEST, gentlest personality of any dog I've ever known and he has adjusted so well. I'm so proud of him!!!"

| A little harsh don't bash me now... I know it's amazing and unbelievable but I am telling you a lot of people still don't know about puppy-mills I know I didn't 4 yrs ago when I bought my Maltese from a pet-store. A little understanding and compassion goes a long way. |

| I don't think so. My Lane is from a puppymill bust. I think a lot of people just have no idea what a puppy mill is, let alone the deplorable conditions these animals are kept in...it's probably best to educate on what exactly a puppymill is...sometimes even descriptions don't get the message across, but I don't know how anyone could see the pictures and videos and not get the message. I'm so glad Jordy is living the life he was always meant to with you! We are still working on potty training with Lane, and we have had her almost 6 months. She has picked it up amazingly fast, but still occasionally likes to use bathroom rugs (I guess they are close enough to pads for her liking). In a lot of ways, I think it was easier to potty train Rory (had her as a puppy on up) than Lane...

| Lets just put it this way ~ I bet your friend regrets that statement. .. I agree that there are way too many people who still know nothing about puppy mills.. I however love your passion and am glad you rescued!

| I think the first sentence is a little harsh but the rest is okay. She honestly may not know anything about puppymills. Before YT I didnt.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Harsh? Not at all. It was a beautiful response. Not only did you give her an answer, but an education as well, and I didn't think it sounded harsh at all. Your co-worker's jaw probably dropped onto her desk when she got done reading your answer, obviously having no idea what was involved with puppymills. Your little guy sounds like a real keeper & lucky to have you for a mom!

| You're right. I was aware they existed and that they were bad places. But, I didn't give them much thought before I found YT, and espcially before I found Jordy.

YT 1000 Club Member | I really didn't think it was harsh. I think you just let her know what his life has been like. Not everyone knows about these sorts of things. I didn't untill I came here. If a friend of mine replied to me with that email I'd think my friend was an awsome person for taking the little guy in. It would probably make me want to learn more and take one in myself.

| this guy clearly doesn't understand the atrocities of puppy mills. Maybe he should be put in a cage for awhile, that'd teach a lesson! |

| I just typed in another thread that although I knew puppymills were a bad thing I had no idea just how bad they really were until seeing a video on Yorkie Talk. I had been a member here for a long time but still it did not sink in just how cruel people could be. When I saw the poor dogs matted so bad they could not walk, that finally let it all sink in. Some people are just plain evil. I don't think you were too harsh. Maybe a lead-in to let her know you understand most don't realize how bad puppymills are would have helped. But since she sent a nice reply, she must have learned and not taken any offense. So -- good job! Just know that everyone you talk with will not understand the horrors your little one has encountered. But letting them know is a good thing.
