| Paisley Parker - 6mo today, diagnosed w/bi lp Paisley is six months old today, yeah!!! Sat. I took her in for a checkup, rabies shot, lepto etc. and while I was there I requested they check her knees. I had noticed that if she was struggling to get out of my arms I would sometimes here some popping. She never has limped, nor has she acted like she was in pain, but I was just uneasy about the popping. Vet diagnosed her with asymptomatic bilateral luxating patella, stage 2. I have been very anxious about the diagnoses and been doing a lot of research, so called back to speak to the vet today. She really seems to not be concerned about it at all. When I asked about prognosis, she said that she should do just fine, and not to be concerned as long as she does not show symptoms. Asked about glucosamine, she said that would not help, as it was not the joint that was the issue, but the knee. She stated that I could give it to her if I wanted, but it would do nothing as far as the lp. Do you all think I should do as she suggested, and not worry about it until she shows symptoms, or should I get a second opinion?

| If she's a stage 2, she probably doesn't need surgery (yet). They usually don't recommend surgery until at least grade 3. I think your vet is right not to worry too much right now. I'd just make sure to keep an eye on her, and have the doctor recheck it at her regular visits. She may never progress past the stage she's in now, or she could move quickly to a grade 3. I'm a firm believer in glucosamine. You're doctor is correct in that the LP itself won't be affected by glucosamine, but the damage it causes can be helped greatly (inflamation, arthritis soreness, etc.). It does not hurt to give them glucosamine and it can have great benefits. I would start her on it now. I recommend Cosequin. Good luck!

| Yes, these little guy need about 250mg-300mg per day. Most people use the regular strength dosage that can also be given to cats (they open the capsule and sprinkle the contents over their food). I buy the double strength chewable liver flavored ones and break them in half (my guys love these and think they're getting a treat ). Either one should be fine for Paisley.
