Thor's Human Donating Member | Question for those with lighter-colored yorkies I know I'll never know Thor's true lineage. I've seen some other yorkies who are colored very similarly to him, and in everything but color, he is very yorkie, so I'm sure he's not a morkie... however, lately I've been wondering if one of his grandparents or great-grandparents might have been a maltese. He came from a pet store "specalizing in small dogs" so who knows what went on there. Anyway, I had a question for those of you with grey doggies. Thor's hair is actually not grey, it is white mixed in with black. His hair is very fine and it's practically every other hair, so even up close, it looks like a solid grey. Is this the case with other blonde yorkies, or is each hair actually grey? I'm wondering if this is a sign of a maltese lurking back there somewhere. He's completely darling either way and of course I love him with all my heart. I guess it's something that will always nag at me a bit, unless I do a genetic test, but it seems like even then, it seems like people can get false negatives. Anyway, just wondering.

| Wow - Max's hair has a lot of different things going on! hahaha! It looks like he has dark roots and that the hair grows out to the light grey but he also has some plain blk hairs mixed in - not too many - just randomly. But his hair has been cut entirely off several times and I do trim it frequently so it's not going to get dark steel grey - like his roots. I know he doesn't have any Maltese in him - why do you think yours does?

Thor's Human Donating Member | Well, he does look a lot like Max. I just wonder because I don't have papers on him and I never, never see yorkies as light as he is around the city. I wouldn't even know they exist, except for YT. I was just thinking about about the fact that he has a lot of WHITE hair, it's just mixed in with other colors, and I wasn't sure if adult yorkies actually have white hair. He sort of looks like he went through his teenage white phase, and then never finished going to adult colors. Sometimes I wonder if that was because of poor diet or stress or something. I look for things to worry about, basically!

| Uni's got a light coat as well. People always ask me if i dye her fur, of course not! her hair is light grey with black mixed in, darker at the roots as well. She is still darkening up I think. She is 2 1/2. The black hairs seem to be thicker too.

Thor's Human Donating Member | Okay, so just to be clear, both of you have yorkies that have GREY hairs, mixed with black, correct? Not white, mixed with black?

| Suzi is 15months old and is very salt and pepper color. I know she is still changing in her coloring. She was shaved down around Jan-Feb. All her baby coat was lost after that. I am looking forward to watching her change coat colors. [ATTACH]280826 She is no where near as light as yours though.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | The first yorkie that I saw and made me want a a yorkie was totally silver. He was even more silver than Thor ( it looks as though Thor has some gold in his muzzle area?) this yorkie had no tan/gold at all, he was adorable. Just as some yorkies will be gold, a few will be silver, like Thor, I still think he's all yorkie and completely adorable.

| I think maybe there could be some white in there. Some of her grey is really light, and those hairs are really fine, so maybe? But there def is grey.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | He was just too cute for words. LOL...only it confused me, because when I went to look at pictures of yorkies (I had never seen a yorkie before), I kept finding all of these black/tan puppies and was wondering where were all the little silver color dogs. LOL...I quickly learned all about yorkie coloring!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | From what I understand the perfect yorkie coat is very difficult to achieve. Quote:

Donating YT 10K Club Member | My first yorkie was grey and you also have to realize it takes awhile for a yorkie to mature coat wise. It can take up to 3 years...which is why you see black/gold yorkies in the ring...it's acceptable due to their age. Reese is 2.5...his coat is STILL changing.

| I don't know a lot about yorkie coloring genes, but I do know about horses With horses, you can get a "double dilute" (perlino or cremello) or just dilute, which is dun. Dun can show up in any coloring of horse, a bay dun will look almost the same as a buckskin, a black dun is a grullo (I have one of each!), there are all sorts of dilutes in horses. I would think, but I am not sure, that similar things can happen in yorkie genes as well. Can you get a double dilute yorkie?
