| Telling me she needs to go out & bolting out My Maddie is 18 months old. She rarely has an accident in the house, but probably only because we are vigilant about taking her out. If we mess up, she will potty in the house. My question is how do I get her to let me know she needs to go out? I have read to watch for her sniffing.... she sniffs ALL the time. I have read about the bells at the door, but am worried my girls or I won't hear her ringing the bells if we are in the back of the house. My second problem is teaching her to not bolt out the front door. She hasn't done this in quite a while, and I work on the sit and wait commands when we go on a walk (but she is on a harness) and when we go in the fenced back yard when she is off leash, but I just don't know if she can be trusted or not at the front door. The advice I read to get her to come back if she gets out did not work! I called her name, ran the other way to get her to chase me and she just ran off down the street like a racing fur ball!!! |

| Mine all use the Yorkie Mind Control method to let us know when they need to go out. It's flawed in that it relies on us being intelligent enough to pick up on their Mind Control efforts...needless to say our IQ's are not as high as our Yorkies. Boo is/was a bolter and we've had to work hard with him to keep him safely inside. He's 100% better at it now, he'll run to the door and lay down on the mat and wait for us to pick him up before we open the door, but I don't think I'll ever 100% trust him to not run out. We are just very viligant when using the front door.

| I have a bell hanging from our front door which leads to our garage. We go through the garage and out the side door, that way if she happens to somehow get out of her leash, at least the garage is shut. The bell has worked wonders for me. Sasha would always go by the front door, but would never bark or do anything to let anyone know she had to go out, so she always had accidents right by the door. Now she just rings the bell! I've read in a few threads on here though in which people have tried the bell technique and their dogs have been afraid of the bell, so it may or may not work, just a suggestion! |

| Bolting - We taught Bailey not to bolt with lots of practice. Every morning, I would kiss hubby good bye at the door, tell Bailey to stay - then open the door and let hubby leave. When bailey stayed, she got a treat. She learned quickly. Now does not go through the front door unless she is invited. Some ppl put a baby gate between the front door and screen door? Bell Ringing - Yep, Bailey is a bell ringer. She rings a service bell placed on the floor. Hubby thought I was crazy when I brought it home - but it works and gets lots of laughs!!! We trained her to ring the bell when we trained her to potty train. As we scooped her up, we took her paw to the bell and said "outside". When we opened up the house to her, we placed bells at the basement door, back door and front door - as well as one in our bedroom. She started to abuse the one in our bedroom - so I picked it up - now she rings the door stop springy thing. LOL!!! Come - very important command. Bailey gets a treat every time she comes - no exceptions!!! Again, with lots of practice, Bailey is very good about coming - in fact, she's kinda trained us. When she's done sniffing around outside, she'll stand there and look at me until I say "Bailey, Come!" - because its the phrase that pays. We are very fortunate that Bailey is good with this command - it saved her the other day. We had a black lab in the yard that was growling at Bailey and Bailey started towards it (she's just so friendly) - hubby whistled (he whistles instead of saying "come") and Bailey turned right around and came to him - without hesitation. Bailey hit the jackpot with treats!!!
