| Yorkie Puppy HATES walking outside!! I hope some one can help me!! Daisey is just about 6 mos. old, and I'm so excited that I finally finished her shots so that I can take her on walks around the neighborhood. She is your typically energetic, bouncing off the walls, curious, has to smell and eat everything yorkie, so I thought that she would enjoy walks. I also thought it would be great to let her walk her energy out. Right?? WRONG!! She goes for about one minute walking and then puts the brakes on and STOPS dead in her tracks!! If I tug the leash a little bit, she goes a few more steps...if I bring the treats with me she'll walk a few steps, eat them and stop...I even tried walking her with my roommate's dog so that maybe she would follow the example...that has not worked either. I don't know what's wrong with her or why she hates walking outside... Before I took her on her first walk, I made sure to get her used to the leash and walked her around the house--she did wonderful!! Then I took her on short walks to the mail box...she displayed the same behavior and just would stop walking after a few steps! I don't know what else to do, because I want to make sure she gets her exercise. Is any one going through this?? Any advice?? |

| I don't have any advice but I noticed when it's real hot outside or raining or snowing, you can forget it. Brandi will not walk. She just stops and looks up at me with those teddy bear eyes. Or she walks so slow it takes forever just to walk one block. When I take her for a walk when the weather is not to her liking, we walk long enough for her to potty. Of course she will stop and smelll everything on the way. When the weather is perfect (in her world) she walks like she has someplace real important to go. It's so cute. I always take treats with me when walking Brandi. The little bugger......as soon as she pottys, she looks up at me as if say "okay I potty now where's my treat". Sometimes I think she tries to fake it just to get her treats. These little guys are really smart. Last edited by yavenay; 06-10-2009 at 06:59 PM. |

| Gus was the same way for several months. I carried him a couple of blocks away from home, & he was okay walking back.

| Yep same thing here with Sweet Pea. She doesn't mind her leash, but will not walk, she will sit and whine to be picked up. I have tried treats and she will eat the treat and not go any further. I have picked her up and walked a bit then put her down and she sits there looking at me..you all know that cute slight turn of the head look like "what???" GGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRR!!!

| Coco was like that until this spring, so pretty much for her first 1.5yrs.. now she walks like a champ and loves it. I usually take her out now when the sun has gone done though, I think during the day when the weather is warm the pavement is to hot for their paws.

| Just keep trying and eventually she will learn to love walks. Took our guy about a month of going every day before he got it. We used to tie a shoe lace to his harness and let him drag it around the house so he would get used to how it feels. I also tied the leash around my waist and walked around the house with him; this was easier as he always wanted to be with me. Also, if you have two people going for a walk, one can coax her to come forward and reward with treats. Just don't give up!
