| I'm not quite ready to bring my baby home yet!! Bailey Blue Baby..Bailey for short will be with me a week from tomorrow and I am still not fully prepared for him!..I was reading on different site about grooming yorkies and they mention that brushing the fur is of the upmost importance, and mention that I need a pin brush and comb, Are all the pin brushes alike? I've only seen a few in the stores here, mind you we only have Walmart and one local pet store in my area..I may call the groomers in my area and see what they use. What do you all use?? Are they all about the same, or not? Another thing is shampoo and conditioner..good grief I thought I could pick up a reg doggie shampoo, but I read that it may be to strong for a yorkies delicate skin..so any suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated. One more thing, do you all groom the bum area yourselves? I would think that would have to be done fairly often, yes? I'm so nervous about bringing my little fellow home, I read that brushing them might hurt them if not done properly So many little things I never gave much thought to before now!

| I was so nervous too, but you have to relax! You are going to get to bring your baby home, enjoy it and don't stress. For now a mild puppy shampoo will do nicely. I would not advice you to wash him too much because then his skin may dry out. Im not sure on the brush, but I have a pin brush that is pin on one side and soft on the other. Even though he is a puppy, I still brush him daily. He hates it, but he needs to get use to it. I have not had to cross the bridge of how to care for his butt yet because he hasn't had any issues in that area yet. I hope I eased your anxiety a little bit and I know that there are many people on here that will be able to help you further. |

| Try to find a pin brush that doesn't have the balls on the ends, they tend to break the hair. There are some great shampoo's out there you can get, Minksheen is a good one alot of people on her rave about. I've used buddy wash and bioclean products. make sure you use something gentle on the head and face.

| I agree with the previous poster -- relax! You are starting on a wonderful, loving adventure -- Yorkie ownership. Although it is often questioned who owns who. I would order a good shampoo, conditioner, and brush on line. I have limited shopping nearby too so I order most of my supplies online. I would recommend one of two brushes: The Madan brush -- a fellow YT member minimoso sells these. Look for her thread on Madan Brushes in the for sale forum. The other choice would be the Chris Christensen brushes. Everyone is raving about the wooden pin brush lately and that is the one I would order if I was going to get another besides the Madan brush. Until you get one of these brushes, you can use an old brush of your own. As a puppy, you are more getting them used to brushing then anything else. So, the brush you use the first couple of weeks is not all important. For shampoo and condiitoner. I love the Espree products. Others recommend the Chris Chritensen products, Minksheen, and Buddy shampoos. Any quality products will work for you. The exact brand is a personal preference and you may want to try a few. You can ask for free samples of some products. If you used your own shampoo or a cheaper puppy shampoo a few times waiting for a quality product, nothing would be hurt. Over time though, using the wrong products can dry the skin and dull the hair. Your puppy will be very forgiving if you don't have every single product on hand when he comes home. Just make sure you have the same food the breeder was feeding, (you can change, but only by doing it slowly) a bed, a blanket, an xpen or play yard to confine him when you can not supervise, food and water bowls, some Nutrical (just in case for low blood sugar), puppy pee pads, a carrier, (harness & leash if you are going to need it to take him out), some toys .... and the rest you can accumulate as you go. You are going to have so much fun!

| I was anxious about the grooming responsibilities in the beginning - but it has turned out to be no big deal for us. First, I keep Bailey (she-Bailey) in a bear-face puppy cut. We go to the groomers every 6 weeks. The groomers take care of everything: the trim, hygiene trim, nails, ears - all of it. Its sooo worth it! Bailey's fur is silky enough that I NEVER brush her. I give her a bath once a week with Wal-mart doggie shampoo w/conditioner. (lots of opinions on shampoos here on the site). After the bath, Bailey will run around the house to dry off. In the winter, we do baths less often and blow dry. Good luck and CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

| Yes, the bristle brush is different than a pin brush. It is a lot of personal preference. One of the professional breeders who also grooms here says she never uses the pin brushes. I found the Madan pin brush to be good for going through simple tangles easily. Some prefer the Chris Crhistensen wood pin brush. I also use a stiff bristle brush because I think they distribute the oils on the hair better to bring up a beatiful shine. So, eventually you might want to try them all too. I use two brushes (bristle and pin) and two combs (one combination fine/medium tooth and one flea comb for the face). What you have is fine.

YT 1000 Club Member | I prefer the pin brush. It seems like it's not so rough. I've been through tons of brushes trying to find one that works for us. Roxie's got hair that's fine and really never matts. I can go a couple of days without brushing (just get too busy somedays) and she has no issues with tangles. I've had brushes that if you pick them up wrong the bristles would poke holes just like needles in your fingers. I certainly can't imagine how that must feel to the poor dog. Finaly when I found the pin brush I was so relieved. You might just have to try a few different things and see what works best with your puppies coat! Have fun and try not to get too overwhelmed. Your about to have the best dog experience of your life!!
